Yep, I totally believe that a small portable device will have the same visuals as a giant PS5. Smh.

For those with a brain, it will not be comparable but most likely along the lines of a ps4 to ps4 pro, with decent RT ability.

Just to keep people’s expectations in check, this won’t be nearly as powerful as current gen consoles. Comparable does not mean the same. It’s likely running the matrix at lower resolutions and settings than the other systems. Dlss 2 is likely helping the Switch 2 version out a lot

Like coal said, raw specs will be closer to ps4. But with a much more modern chip and architecture, and likely much better CPU

Super excited for this

Wouldn't the battery last like 10 minutes if rtx is enabled since it's so intensive?

Honestly it would be nice if Nintendo can use rtx for switch 2 and I'd trust their developers more than anyone to utilize it efficiently .... However I don't think it's really needed since some ninty games look damned good based on artstyle alone. They should be trying to get better performance/battery life undocked and docked.

Remember when you make a console, you need to have it future proofed, especially if it's about to last the next 8 years. Just this year alone we saw the writing on the wall as to where the industry is going, and that's RT. Most games on Switch 2 will be 3rd party and devs seem to be using baked in RT techniques in their games (Jedi Survivor, FF16). I think the PS5/XSX have plenty of power to run those mentioned games well, but it's just the weak RT capability that's creating a massive tank in performance.

Switch 2 will be well around after the launch of the PS6 and it seems that RT and lighting will be a definining part of next gen.

So a new update:

-apparently they showed a demo of Zelda botw at 4k/60 with almost zero load times. Using dlss from a base resolution of 1080p.

The original botw ran at 900p/30 with about 30 seconds load time

this is a definite upgrade and exciting for Nintendies but is still pretty lackluster. All the leaks I've seen point to PS4 Pro performance, which is an upgrade over the original Switch, but a PS4 Pro in 2024? That targets 1080p and 30 fps?

Then you have people mentioning DLSS2 as some sort of savior. You do not know what you are talking about, and are about to hit the same issues PC users have been experiencing for years now.

DLSS renders a lower resolution image and then upscales it to a higher one. It gives you a LOWER resolution in exchange for higher framerates. So not only do you get a lesser image quality that can artifact (especially in motion), but devs now use DLSS as a crutch for not optimizing their games.

You want 1080p (lol) 60fps NATIVE. DLSS should be a fallback in 4-5 years when the Switch 2 can't natively give you those frames, but relying on DLSS at launch? fukkin lol.

Then you have games that don't even support DLSS. Jedi Survivor just recently got it. Starfield relies on a 3rd party patch for DLSS (so Switch users would be SOL).

Ironically, DLSS3 would actually be perfect for Nintendo. It gives you hella frames in exchange for input lag, but there are no competitive games on Switch so who cares about input lag anyways. DLSS3 is literally perfect for Switch 2, but Nintendo is again launching behind the 8 ball, so that sucks for the users.

I bought a Switch but it felt like a waste of money, will probably end up just emulating Metroid 4 whatever decade it finally comes out.

You believe the PS5 pro will run AAA games at 4k 120 FPS. This isn't that far out of your spectrum of reality.

Maybe for something like the matrix demo, but that shouldn’t be surprising. That portion of the vgc article wasn’t talking about dlss. All of switch’s current first party games are already above 540p. Usually 900p or 1080p

Just in regards to your dlss comments. Yes, I’m well aware it’s upscaling from a lower res. That doesn’t mean lack of optimization. It’s a technique in the toolbox, and you wouldn’t often get those “output” resolutions without it. And dlss can often resolve data that’s not in the native output resolution without dlss

basically all of the comments on that video disagree with you and highlight the main point: when developers rely on any form of temporal upscaling to reach playable framerates, it is no longer a "technique in the box". If you cannot ship a game that maintains 60fps stable without DLSS, then you have not done your job as a developer. Upscaling should be my option as a consumer. I'm willing to trade some artifacts (or on FSR, A LOT of artifacts) to go above 60fps.

Yes but not in the way you think, and definitely not at the resolutions the Switch is slated to run at.

do you see how even at quality, the trees are missing so much data? Now imagine 1080p performance mode. Lol

It's just simple math:

4k image * DLSS quality = 2560 * 1440 internal resolution = 3.69 million pixels for the AI upscaler to work with.
1080p image at DLSS quality = 1280 * 720 internal resolution = 921,600 thousand pixels for the AI upscaler to work with.

Now imagine trying to project both of those images onto a 4k screen. The missing information in the 1080p image is going to be much more noticeable. This is why PC users generally will only turn on DLSS for 4k, because below that the image quality suffers more. This is also assuming quality DLSS. At lower levels it gets WAY worse.

Still for PC this isn't that bad. If I'm not happy with having to run DLSS ultra-performance and rendering an image at 480p, I can upgrade my video card. A Switch user cannot. They are stuck for the next 7-8 years. This is also why I say DLSS3 would be perfect for the Switch. DLSS3 buffers output but because of that can do much many more calculations that give you more frames AND image quality (to an extent). The Switch will release next year, 2 years after DLSS3 was introduced, and not have it. It will literally launch 2 years behind the curve. Either way, you should always hope hardware can run things natively and not have to rely on temporal upscaling for the bare minimum.

I think the vast majority of switch 2 first party titles will be aiming for 4k output with dlss, using internal resolutions of 1080p or 1440p.

Most standard switch first party games are already 900p or 1080p native. Nintendo won’t be upscaling from 720p in 90% of cases

I agree upscaling to 1080p isn’t great, the more input data dlss has, the better the output result

Hopefully so. Nintendo isn't known for making powerhouse consoles and who can blame them when they still sell well. TotK had a dynamic res that could drop below 720p, and I saw single digit framerates in some areas while playing. I remember BotW performance issues at launch too. If the Switch 2 can exceed the steam deck I think a lot of people would be happy.

How many of you actually dock you Switch?

The PPI of 1080p on a 6 inch screen is very solid and will get you better battery life.

IMO you can expect 1660s performance...

I play my switch docked 99% of the time. And switch screen isn’t 1080p, it’s 720p.

We don’t know. Some say it might. Credible rumors have the screen size much bigger than the current switch, so they may go higher resolution for it
