Daycare More Expensive Than State College

This has been true in TX for over a decade IIRC. But it looks like other states have been catching up.

Maybe some of these people would be better off quitting their $35/yr office manager job and just watching their kids at home.

I feel like a $150k/year income (more in NY/CA obviously) is the bare minimum to even consider having a kid if your intention is to provide them some semblance of a middle class upbringing.

how many people / households make this on average in America right now?

I have no idea what the data is now, but 10-15 years ago they were saying the majority of dual income homes with kids would be better off if the one making less stayed home - the two biggest factors were daycare and going down at least one tax bracket. But there were a lot of small components as well, like car maintenance and whatnot

Good doulas in NYC easily run in the 100+ per hour too (depending on your insurance coverage).

But raising children is far more expensive if you're 'alone'. If you're in a family community you can have an aunt or something watch your kid, and in all honesty a lot of the paid care is terrible. Very little attention given to children.

I've seen those breakdowns for years, and with few exceptions most people would probably be better off in general. But then they wouldn't be able to afford $100k SUVs and eating out every day, so I guess they have their priorities.

Good thing women fought so hard to go to work

Family purchasing power stayed the same. Just takes two people to do it and then you pay most of that for someone else to raise your kid

Imagine if you had to pay for an extra building with furnishings and utilities just for childcare, buy liability insurance to insure against your child being injured in some way, and pay an hourly rate high enough to get reliable staff? All of this vs. a family member watching your children in their own home?

Childcare has always been a job with low pay...often less than retail or food service. However I am sure that as other bottom tier jobs have been forced to raise wages childcare wages must have increased also.

I worked most of the first year. I had credit card debt that I was trying to pay off. However it didn't take long to figure out it was a wasted effort after all of the expenses [childcare, commuting, etc.]

I'm not against a spouse staying home, but you have to acknowledge that it isn't an option for a lot of people. Also time out of the workforce usually means lifetime lower earnings for whoever stays home.

I am pretty sure the people commenting stuff like that don't have their own families.

Ideally it would be best for society if women stayed home imo. But it's just not possible anymore for most middle class people.

My kid is in daycare ($1700/month), but we would definitely be feeling much more of a squeeze if my wife didn't work. Her salary pays for half of the day care, plus her health coverage is a lot better and a lot less expensive than mine so we are all on her plan. No salary on her end plus everyone on my health plan would lower my weekly income by over $300. It would be really tough.

Almost like they want women to be secure that they can divorce at will, further undermining the nuclear family...

I don't believe that current systems are supportive of the nuclear family, but I believe that pushing women into the labor market was probably a lot more about keeping wages low.

lol at having children only to stick them in a kennel all day to be raised by some low class, crayon haired inkie sloots

The women I worked with would be a few months pregnant and already interviewing daycares. Career women of piss.

imagine if we actually had family values in this country and could use grandma to watch the grandkids for FREE during the day?

Nah, rather pay someone $2k/mn who doesn't even care about the kid.

I do think there are forces that want to destroy the nuclear family. At the same time, I think it's good for women to have options. There's plenty of sloots, but there are a lot of good women, too, that end up in situations where they need to be able to earn money. Husbands cheat and run off with coworkers, some women are widowed young (insurance is a better solution there), etc. My wife has a college degree but hasn't worked since we had our first 17 years ago. She has options but hasn't needed them. My hope for my daughters is that they could do the same. Even though my wife hasn't worked outside the home, I think the college degree was money well spent.

Women should marry young to older men, have several kids, and stay home with them instead of wasting time trying to work and get a “college education”. It’s pretty simple really.

Honestly... good.

Imagine having kids then passing off the responsibilities for the better part of the day each and every week. Typical of people in the world today. There's almost 0 accountability for any actions now.
"One day I won't be able to lift any more. Not I won't want to lift. I mean physically unable. That day could be decades from now or it could be tomorrow. All I know is that's the day I'll wish I could lift more than ever. The day I'd give anything for one more workout, one more set, or one more cardio session. So go hard and enjoy every workout, every set, every rep. Because one day you will wake up and you will never get it back."

I've seen articles in the past pointing out how state regulations can drive day care costs way up. It can explain why some states cost much more than others.

https://www.aier.org/article/daycare...er-regulation/

....In a paper published in Applied Economics, Devon Gorry and Diana Thomas pointed out that states have established strict licensing requirements as well as service-specific regulations. These take the form of degree requirements for educators, continuous training requirements, minimum child-staff ratios, group size restrictions, and building specifications.

All of these regulations are structural measures of quality which appear to have little relevance to the actual quality of the service. In fact, most of the relevant dimensions of childcare quality are nearly impossible for states to regulate (or enforce). States prefer to regulate these structural measures of quality, even if they bear little economic significance, because they are easily assessed. The problem is that they also increase costs which, in turn, means that parents pay higher tuition fees. ....
