The first job out of college, because that's the first one to offer me a 401k plan, age 22. The first company had a terribly small match (1.5%) and an egregious 5 years vestment period - had to give them back their match when I quit. After that I've been at jobs where the 401k match was way higher (6%) and vestment period was short enough for me to keep the match.
So far I've always done just the match and nothing more, because I've wanted more accessible money for a down payment recently, or otherwise before that to pay off debts. Currently debt free.
I always did roth accounts, because I wanted to look at the number and not question what it'll look like after taxes. $70k in there atm at age 28 srs.
