Most people are more aware of the Carrington Event of 1859.




It was a coronal mass ejection which caused auroras to be seen as far south as the Caribbean and newspapers could be read in the dead of night. In 1859 it was little more than an inconvenience which disrupted telegraph lines which had just begun to be widely utilized.

Fun trivia: DISASTER means "bad star".

Some consider it very strange that we have gone 164 years without being hit by a CME on the level of the Carrington Event. There is an estimate that if a Carrington level radiation storm were to hit today that it would cause $3T in damage just in the US.

One advantage we do have over previous times is that our satellites should give us a few days warning to at least attempt to power down and shield some systems. We may not get hit any time in the next 10 years, or we could see a large event within the next 18 months. There are rumors of a possible "solar event" occurring in October of 2024, though I haven't tried to track down any reason or source for that.




Either way it's bound to happen eventually as it has happened so reliable in the past. Enjoy the clean tap water, air conditioning, and internet while it's here.

It is either going to happen, or not.

Neither scenario requires anything to be done.

I mean, from a curiosity perspective, it is interesting, but as far as worrying or speculating about it, completely unnecessary.

They happen to kill off most of humanity. Basically a galactic reset button from the homo contagion

Probably wouldn’t have had much of an impact for the vast majority of mankind’s time here. But with satellites, power grids, and all the other delicacies that are required for life as we know it, it could wreck the fukk outta things here on Earth if it happened now. Sad to say, but we probably need something like this to happen. We have strayed too far from the optimal path, hence why we see societal unraveling and collapse right before our eyes. May need to tear down and start going in a different, more natural direction.

That is kind of the point. There are so many things that *might* happen which we have no control over.

Though what appears to be a complete lack of any real preparation for a known threat is lame. All the money that our government burns through for nothing at all that could be spent on resilience instead.

An earlier warning is a good thing probably.

Individuals have to look to their own preparations or not. On a government level it would be nice to think that we had a plan for supplying people with clean water, maintaining some sort of communication system, and at least rations for first responders.

If it has been known for quite some time that recovering from a Carrington level event could take 2 or 3 years + that given our present dependence on the electrical grid 95% of people would perish in a year's time = why don't we have preparations for at least a 2 year power outage?

Even if those preparations are for a very bleak scenario. What's the plan for handling high mortality? Bodies, roles unexpectedly vacated, orphans?

And all that better be in hard copy, not some electronic plans all dependent on electricity to access.
