Lately I've been mentoring and training young people as they graduate college and enter the workforce.

When I was studying for my Masters degree in Counseling Psychology we learned about the "broken record" technique. My therapist reminds me to use it when I'm dealing with pushy people in my personal life as I'm a people pleaser.

I work in a tech field where many other teams are pushy and beyond professional, as their management tells them to even stand outside my cube to ensure that they receive approval to go to production! Talk about annoying. Luckily our building is locked down from them now. I even had one guy ask a colleague which work shuttle I was on as he was going to jump on and try to convince me to give him approval! I won't go into detail of what I do, but you get the point.

Well, the recent college grads are becoming overwhelmed with the pushy people. One guy messaged one young woman I'm training 10 times insisting that she join a meeting to go over technical details and she's not technical at all. I asked her to ask an engineer on our team to review the app team's email proposal and she was waiting for his response. This guy was being beyond professional, and that's very common in my position. They always say "Urgent, Urgent" when something really isn't urgent, as they may have a Go-live date in November and I'm working with teams who need to go live in 2 days.

Hence I told her to tell him, "I'm sorry I cannot join your meeting as I do not have the information from the engineer yet. Please watch for an update via email or Slack". He kept insisting that she join the 2pm meeting to review the technical details, even though she wouldn't be able to answer a single one of his questions. So I told her to use the broken record technique! I just tell these guys the same thing over and over and refuse to attend their meeting. I'm too busy managing other teams and testers to attend a lot of meetings with app teams, as they'll mostly go on and on about their app and technical details which don't pertain to my job. I mostly manage and I don't get into the weeds of source code review, etc.

She was really getting stressed out and frazzled. She just graduated with a Masters degree in Project Management from a top school on the East Coast, but in school you don't deal with pushy people like you do in the workforce, especially in tech. I don't know how long she'll last. I've seen 11 people get fired or quit this job in the past 8 years. Many couldn't handle the volume of emails or the pressure we receive from teams.

Yet there is a lot of power in this position. I love that, plus it's like a daily puzzle to get the operations down smoothly and I work with different app teams each day so it's never boring.

So yes--use the broken record technique in your personal and professional lives! Setting boundaries is important.

I started working on my Masters but then I got pregnant and that threw off my career plan to become an Eating Disorder therapist. I really wanted to give back to the community.

Instead my husband pushed me to return to tech part-time when our daughter was 6 months old because of course the $$$ is great and it would have taken years to get the degree and the internship in order to become a therapist.

It was was a great decision in retrospect, though, as I wouldn't want to be a therapist now. At the time I felt like all I was doing was making big companies make more money and not giving back to the community via my career. Now I can give back in ways such as volunteering at an animal shelter.

I need to be more like you as I'm too "nice" and a people pleaser. Then I get sucked into too many things and end up severely sick like I'm now. I set boundaries by becoming sick so I'm not running around meeting this friend or that friend, rushing to the gym in between the chaos and helping my parents or doing work. It's just nonstop. Now I'm bored sitting at home all day recovering from pneumonia lol.

People don't care about what you think, or whwt any other random people think, nearly as much as you seem to think they do.

Well people pleasing comes from an abusive childhood in my case. I worry about pissing people off.

But most don't care if I tell them I can't see them for a few weeks like you said. I just always feel guilty.
