THe drinking water back then was really really bad. So they drank booze mostly cause the fermentation process made the liquid drinkable.

If you look at the stats UK is pretty average for overall alcohol consumption per capita, some other European countries are quite a bit higher

But brits have a tendency to binge drink hard on weekends and do stupid ****, especially if abroad

Couple pints with the blokes after work. I like the idea of that, maybe in my early 20s. I remember a small microbrewery opened up in my hometown and myself and my friends went very once in a blue moon, but I had that exact moment of contemplation, wondering what life would be like if I hit that pub after work with the mates every day and rocked a couple of pints. Seems fun at first glance, but doesn't seem sustainable. Maybe for a little while in your early 20s before marriage and children.

RIP liver, though.
