Anyone ever changed out their struts?

I got beat up pretty badly. The good news is my ride is a lot smoother now. It takes bumps like a champ

Struts are something that I'll happily pay someone else to do who has a lift.

Last time, I took it to my low grade mechanic, and said I tried doing it myself but didn't have the time. And so he basically begged me to let him do it, and charged like $600 on a BMW. Probably would have been a $1500 repair at the dealer.

Wouldn’t doubt that a bmw strut would be $$1500

But yeah it’s more manageable if you have two people but if you’re a one man band it becomes super difficult

Just changed them on my winter beater. Getting it ready for the season. I live in the rust belt, so it can be a pain to work on.

Needed it done recently. I’m fairly mechanically inclined with vehicles but after watching some how-tos I just took it to a shop. Seemed like a huge PITA
Lifts:
Squat: 460x1
Bench: 400x1
Deadlift: 575x1
OHP: 250x2
Weight: 180 lbs.

Don't have heroes; look up to no one. Because as long as someone's leading the way, the best you'll ever be is second.

You're only fukt if the bolts are rusted and break off, in which case a 2 hour job just became an all day job. An all weekend job if you don't have a welder.

It's such a pain in the angus, jeep guys will cut a hole in the floor to get at the shock bolts.

Depends on your idea of a strut.. a MacPherson strut is a shock that's built to be housed inside a coil spring that's contained in one assembly

Relatively simple to replace the whole unit as long as you remember to keep support under the lower control arm prior to removal




Now the setup with a shock absorber & coil spring sitting apart from each other.. yeah I don't recommend people do that @ home; you release the spring pressure too quickly & you have 2000psi flying in any direction it wants..

damn op repped. I think my 03 is still on OEM struts so I'm sure I'll need new ones... one of these days. Good to know it's definitely a thing to take to a shop.
