I enjoy aspects of it. Cyber Security. My gross income is in the top 5% for individual income in my area, top 12% for household income in my area, and I WFH, so this often makes up for a lot of the downsides.

There are rewarding elements to it, and my team generally gets along and is humorous. Some of them avoid the complex and unorthodox work though, which can be frustrating. But it feels good to "be the smart one" that sees a complex case to its end, or finds something that everyone else is struggling to find.

They could not handle free time with no instructions. Personally? I thrived. I am happiest without restriction because I am a deeply introverted self starter incompatible with modern society.

I am a Mechanical Engineer that works for a Mechanical Contractor designing & coordinating large commercial projects... think stadiums , hospitals , & high rises buildings....

I enjoy the creative aspect of what I do... creating something from absolutely nothing & getting to watch it come to life out in the field. I also enjoy the fact that because of what I do... because of how much work I can produce from this one office on this one computer , I am able to keep hundreds of people employed.

Realistically I can’t. See post #11 for explanation. I think about different options all the time. If I had a Time Machine I’d either join the national guard or become a tradie at 18 so by now I would be set and have a masculine, motivating, fulfilling career track worthy of respect. But I waited too long and now money is the main focus, so I am too risk adverse to jump ship. I don’t know how to make it any other way than to rot at a cubical. Maybe that will change someday. In the meantime, the best I can hope for is out earning inflation and hoping some investment takes off that can free me of wage slavery. I will definitely teach my children to not be so passive about their future.

I get what you're saying and can certainly understand this position to an extent....but.... That old saying of "Its never too late" has been around as long as it has for a reason bruh...

Right out of HS I rolled right into college like most do...hit it hard AF not really taking any breaks for the next 2.5 years and finally got burnt out and tired of being broke.... So @ 20yo I joined an Plumbers Apprenticeship program through Local Union 68 in Houston... Very first day I sat next to this guy who at the time was in his late 40's which seemed odd to me. Over the next couple of years I got to know him pretty well and turns out he was a Professor @ UT for 20 years and just got tired of it and wanted to learn a trade...and he saw it through turning out as a Journeyman Plumber through the state of Texas eventually... He is actually the one who encouraged me to start taking night classes at the same time I was working and going to apprenticeship school to finish my Mechanical Engineering degree.

Love my job. Working for someone else but don't care about that. Spending time teaching kids and watching them learn and be fun and full of life definitely brings a level of happiness and compassion that you can't get with other jobs. Makes you shrug off the general daily crap and just appreciate the small things. Keeps you mentally young too and less pessimistic. Forever young. Can't not be a kid hanging with kids all day. The older than 7 crew drives you a bit up the wall sometimes but 4-6 are just fun to hang with. Some of them are smarter than some adults on here.
