Plumbers are some of the biggest f*cking labor rip-offs I've ever seen.

My lord the price of plumbing work these days is damn near an arm and a leg. It's essentially $300 just to get a plumber to even come to your house these days, let alone fix something. Plumbers with their own companies make insane bank. Probably 300k+/year if they're getting a lot of business. I know one dude who charges $500 minimum for any clog related issue. So even if he pulls up to your house and unclogs whatever is clogged in 5 minutes... $500. Sh!t is crazy.

It pays to have basic handyman skills to fix things if you want to own a home. On the other hand, a five minute job is just one broken bolt from becoming an all day pain in the azz.

I've owned homes in the past and learned how to do basic plumbing/electrical jobs myself. That basically pays for itself.

I wonder if there's decent money to be made in a toilet-unclogging business where that is literally the only thing you do.

Get one of those accordion style plungers, a long snake thing, and basically just advertise it as "Only pay if we get it unclogged" and charge like 200/hr (15 min minimum). I guarantee there are tons and tons of clogs around town every day where the home owner/renter only has one of those chitty kitchen sink plungers and they feel hopeless after 10 mins of plunging and would be more than happy to pay to get it unclogged... go in and do literally 5 minutes of work and be like "Okay that'll be 50 bucks".

And if you're there for like 30 mins and it's obviously not coming unclogged...just leave. Customer won't lose any money so they probs won't be too upset about your service...and offer them some names of "real" plumbers lol.

thats the dumbest thing ive read all day.used to work with my moms boyfriend who was a plumber.your not gonna be able to pay the bills going across town unclogging toilets.most of the time its not a simple clog and you would be wasting money cause lots of times its gonna take more than 30 minutes.and you need good snakes.not those chitty $20 snakes.but can comfirm its a chitty job but there is lots of money to be made

I have had 2 issues this year and I solved them all by myself using youtube tutorials especially if it's a clog issue those are the easiest to fix yourself.

Most plumbing stuff isn't very hard. I mean, yeah when you have a code inspection building a new system you might find a certified pro is the better way to go but to fix your sink or change a toilet it's not that big of a deal. It's disgusting work that's why it's hard to get people to do it.

Oh yeah Misc, when hiring a plumber, be aware of this one tall skinny bald guy plumber named Johnny.. He didn't fix chit but my wife seems to think he's the best and keeps hiring him every time she see's even what she thinks is a drip. Funny how these leaks only happen while I'm at work.

A buddy of mine's wife called a plumber while he was out of town because their toilet tank wasn't filling. They charged her $380 and installed a new plastic fill valve. They are $8 at Lowes.

My buddy sent them a letter telling them he was taking them to small claims court and they immediately discounted back to whatever the basic service/show up charge is around $100.

99% of plumbing work is so easy a child could do it...The other 1% is why plumbers charge insane amounts of money.

I've rebuilt toilets from the wax ring up (entire internals). I hurt my back about five years ago and called a plumber to replace a failed wax ring. He wanted $300 to replace the wax ring. I gutted it up and suffered through the replacement. There is zero chance I am paying $300 for a 15 minute wax ring replacement.

I was having an issue with my septic tank and the pump not working, we had just moved into the house about a year ago......Had a company come out to Pump my Tank, charged me $650 then the guy "assessed my system" walked around the house and looked at a few things then told me I needed a new pump and the whole system needed to be re-wired, quoted me $9600.

I fixed the problem the next day.....2 of the breakers that control the septic system that were in a box on the side of the house were tripped. Flipped them back on and the pump kicked on and has been working fine ever since. That was 6 months ago.

Fukking crooks.

Yeah, I'm lazy and don't like to deal with trying to do that kind of chit myself but...outsourcing any sort of DIY chit just seems to be ridiculously expensive these days.

Ya a power vent hot water tank costs them under one K , but after re hooking up the water , gas and outlet pipe that is already there in place , they quoted me 4K for what is essentially two hours of labour lol .
Guess in B.C. labour for a journeyman is $1500 an hour

I got a new water heater installed and it cost me 2k. The water heater itself is like 500-700, and I think these plumbers get a discount too. Didn't take him very long to install either, since these guys obviously know what they're doing. Sh!t is crazy.

We have a plumber that does our work for tolerable prices. It costs us $75 to have him come out, but his work is top notch and pricing good. He retired from his plumbing work when living up north. Here in Florida to earn extra retirement money he started his own plumbing company and handles only a few clients.

This is what people don't get. Everyone wants be be a bottom feeder at corporation pushing emails all day, not realizing that their job is basically meaningless. Suddenly, all the necessary trades jobs become much more valuable because most men don't do any labor or do anything themselves. Then the price of labor goes up since demand drives up while these skills become more uncommon.

Hello $500 job to fix a small pipe for 30 min.

I mean would you really want someone tinkering around your house and possibly ****ing something up. or someone who knows his job down to the T coming in and getting out and fixing the issues with no problems?

Yea they're scum but plumbers don't make as much bank as you think, i know a plumber that makes between 90-120K working 30 hr weeks

Imagine that doing a job nobody wants to do themselves makes decent money.

You can also quite easily do your own taxes, but people pay accountants thousands yearly to do them. I hired a firm two years ago and they literally did nothing I couldn't do myself with Turbotax and charged me $800.

I replaced the pipe to my sprinkler system. Shut the water to my home, cut off the leaky pipe, replace it with the glue and all that jazz. $15 in parts and about 45 minutes. Had to dig a little and it was muddy. This happened on a Sunday.

Yea but honestly its not just the work. If it's a company they're paying for the employees insurance, their insurance for the job, the car, the insurance on the car, the tools on the car, the gas on the car, etc..

Had an a/c dude tell me if I just bought a breaker it could be 20 bucks. Otherwise they charged like 250 or 350 to go out there
