The night before last, I was all settled and ready to sleep. My dog hops onto the windowsill and starts barking furiously. I heard the unmistakable sound of a human crunching through the leaves. Two strides. For sure. Terrifying. The only time that is a welcome sound is when the transformer blows up and the power guys have to come around.
I got all hyped up and got a firearm. Then I remembered I saw a deer out by the magnolias out front. Ugh.
So annoying. I closed the window and settled in to sleep.
Tonight, the pupper gets up on the windowsill again and commences barking. Again, I hear the crunching, but the stride is different. I look out there and see a rather large varmint of some kind. Raccoon? It was striding towards a shack that's about 30 feet from my window. I raise some long haired mice there for my doggo. The mice had had many babies recently.
I figure the varmint wants to eat them. Turns out it was a possum and they're very dumb. Got in a clean shot, and all the babies screamed in a panic. One more as a courtesy shot and I went inside. About 20 minutes later, after I was sound asleep, the pupper starts blowing up on the window sill again! I think to myself, damn I guess the possum must have played dead and fooled me. But it was weird because I was sure I'd nailed him.
The next morning I go out there and left the pupper inside just in case the body was still there.
It was. I was right about the size. What a terrible stink it had. That first shot nailed the poor sucker so hard I had to use a hoe to scrape it up. Nasty bloodstain on my tarp and was heavy af.
I let the pupper out and we did the animals. Then went to go check on the cotton. story continues after pictures.

Here's where it gets interesting. On my walk I found another possum in a pile of feathers. I surmised what must have happened. This second possum must have disturbed my boy after I killed the first one. Then it killed a waterbird by the pond, which explains the fluffy feathers around it. Then, that possum was killed by a coyote pack and eaten along with the bird. I didn't hear any howling, but it was torn apart. I took pictures of the nasty eaten possum too, but it's gross.

Anyway that's the story of the farm varmints. Now I'm tired.
