USA bros, was this how life was like in the 90s?
I keep seeing stuff from ads and shows about 90s USA, and it looks like heaven on earth.
- Family lives in beautiful suburbs with lush green lawns
- Dad works 9-5, mom is SAHM
- Kids get all the latest toys, super soakers, he-man, TMNT, dino riders, mask, etc.
- Kids have enough money to get body armour/etc. and pretend/play american football on their beautiful green lawns
- Every weekend is always superbowl with a BBQ, chips, lots of soft drinks
- Every friday night is smackdown, family buys pizza and watches together
- Every meal is pizza or burgers with a big gulp at maccas or hungry jacks
- saturday night is go to the mall, get the latest toys, mom gets the latest fashion, then see some GOAT 90s movie like rambo or die hard or something
- gets new vidya all the time for their NES
- holidays to disneyland and exotic destinations to mexico, latam, hawaii all the time
- high school if you're the jock you get the cheerleader, the nerds get the theatre/band girls, everyone gets with someone
If I died and went to heaven, this is what I want it to be.
Aus in the 90s was recessionland, everyone was poor and miserable as fuk. All you hear is stories about how people worked 2 jobs, people ate fake disgusting westernised chinese food once every 3 months as a treat, went to some chitty local town as a holiday. It's actually the same but much worse now, depressing as fuk.

It actually was like that sometimes, assuming you lived in a the suburbs. If you lived in the hood, then you dealt with gangbangers and crack fiends. Life was much more dangerous back then than it is now. Also plenty serial killers roaming around.

the 90s were amazing, no where near as much crime as there is now, basically all the bad chit that's around now wasn't around, or, it was around with a much smaller foot print, you could actually go to sleep and dream of a better tomorrow
now when i go to bed and IF I dream...I dream of WW3, doom, gloom...and having to activate my super powers to save the world.

Pretty much. I mean some of that no. I grew up in the 90s in a small suburban/rural town 45 min. away from chicago and it was the best childhood ever. My entire street was filled with kids within 1-5 years of each other, all the dads worked while all the moms stayed at home. We were all pretty low middle class living paycheck to paycheck in a quiet but newer/nicer area, but everyone had something where we just went house to house to play. One kid had n64, another had ps1, another had sega, etc. Always had huge neighborhood games and stuff.
We all played soccer or football across multiple yards, street wide water balloon fights, ghost in the graveyard, riding our bikes to the new dairy queen, street hockey, and sleep overs every weekend. Everyone had pools and we would switch off to each pool on certain days, we all carpooled for stuff, if our parents had to do stuff then we'd go to one family's house and they'd watch us. We'd play magic the gathering, pokemon, video games with the older siblings too, tons of the coolest boardgames and some of which had videos you watched while you played along, movie nights with popcorn, bonfires with smores, making creepy crawlers, water gun fights, laser tag fights in the neighborhood, and huge backyard forts we'd camp in some nights.
You have no idea how good it was OP. No idea. Didn't matter that we'd eat like cubed ham and noodles or dry chicken breast and instant potatoes to save money, it was like living in heaven as a kid in terms of enjoyment.

The 90s for me were roach infested poverty ghetto filled, etc. My life now is so much better.
When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.

90's was the cliff edge, and by 1991, pretty much hit rock bottom.
I'm not blessed with riches, but I am rich with blessings.
Thank you, LORD, my God.

Peaceful suburban town with everything you need in walking distance.
Ride bike over to friends neighborhood and hang with the boys
Gather local kids and play kickball in big green field
Hang out with neighborhood girls at the gazebo and play truth or dare, get first ever smooches from blonde cheerleader
Back to friends house to smash some pudding cups and boot up the n64
Walk to corner store for some icies
Play some manhunt until it gets too dark then either have sleepover or ride bike back home
Sometimes you don't even realize you're in the good times until they're gone

Aus has one one the highest and best GDP/capita in the world, but poverty times never ended. 90s were chit due to recession, 2000s were learning to catch up from the 70s (some "cities" are still stuck there), 2010s were the GFC that never ends, 2020s is worlds highest house prices. Just a never ending streak of stinky brown chit. There was a time in the 2010s when AUD to USD was something like 0.90, and even then, times were chit, because the whole world turned to chit by then.
Heaven is literally USA in the 90s. Imagine doing all those, then flying to venice beach for holidays in summer with your mates, picking up hot chicks, surfing, skateboarding and literally living on heaven on earth.
Your comment on tech is very interesting, because in the past, its always seen as very exciting and good. Now its dreaded and seen as either nefarious (tiktok, metaverse), to replace jobs for billionaires (openAI, chat gpt), or force you to spend more (solar, EV) I remember when phones and SMS came out, it was GOAT, I would SMS my crush, and save all the "I like/love/miss you" SMS in a special folder.

- burrito supreme's were $1.49ish and i remember damn near begging my mom to get me one when we went there
- also these chocolate things called yoo-hoo's were 79cents at the time and id get one a couple times a week
- best friend lived 1/2 mile away, id walk to his house or hed walk to mine unexpectedly or randomly
- USD went way farther
- weekends sometimes consisted of going to hollywood or blockbuster to rent movies (HNNNNNG FEELS)
- was all around GOAT compared to now

Growing up in the 90's some things I notice now that happened in the 90's that don't really happen anymore at least where I live
-Kids nowadays where I live don't play outside I rarely see kids ride their bike or playing sports. They're probably all inside on their smart phones watching tik tok or on instagram.
I remember biking to my friends house that lived like 10 mins away. Now teens would rather take uber/lyft to their friends house since most don't even want to get a drivers license.
-Movies were way better. I remember going to the movies on the weekends was a huge occasion, and then hanging out at the mall afterwards. Also, if not going to the movies renting movies from Blockbuster or just spending 30 mins in there browsing around. Always remember Blockbuster only allowing you to have a brand new movie for 2 days.
-This could just be me since it was just as unhealthy as it is now, but I remember fast food tasting better in the 90's and don't get me started on the prices, but that's also probably because I was a kid, and the nostalgia. I remember Roy Rogers being amazing. Do they still even exist.
-Then of course wrestling. WWF attitude era was the GOAT 1997-2000.
-Also girls were more receptive back then if you tried talking to them. I Remember calling my crush once on the home landline, and hoping her dad didn't answer lol. Now teens these days probably just "Slide into their crush's DM" and get left on read lol.

Where did it go to?
Will there be another USA in the 90s ever again?
USA in the 90s worries were asking girls to prom dates, saving for the latest console, worrying if a t-shirt looked cool or not
2020s kids worries are which gender I am, which political party to support, is the earth going to catch on fire.
a minute of enjoyment in USA of the 90s = a lifetime of enjoyment for 2020s kids.
world is beyond fukked

90’s commenced dismantling the Soviet Union
If only they’d had a credible model of government to transition to at the time
BRB your life savings are now worthless

The 90s was peak life for most Americans.
The only thing that was worse was food. Everyone ate chit like grilled cheese, bologna sandwiches, corn dogs, go-gurt and Little Debbie snacks. The obesity epidemic began in the 90s for good reason.
Almost everything about society today is worse, but food options are better.
