Breaking: Microsoft to ban unofficial 3rd party accessories from Xbox

Wow. This is a pretty big deal.

https://www.windowscentral.com/gamin...after-november

On one hand this is obviously just pretty awful all around. Cheap controllers, fight sticks, who knows what else.

On the other hand this could virtually eliminate cheaters using strike packs and cronus devices. With Microsoft owning call of duty now, I think this is could be a major reason for this.

At the end of the day tho this really just seems like a big mistake from Microsoft, I'm not sure what their end goal is here by doing this. Alot of people use cheaper 3rd party stuff.

Oddly enough I just ordered a gamesir g7se Xbox controller because it's supposed to have hall joysticks that eliminate stick drift. In a few weeks I won't even be able to use it on my Xbox lmao.

This won't work at all. There's no way to detect the device this gen. They would have to bake in auth from the controllers. Even then you could just add that to your device.

I'm biased since I currently only own 1st party controllers, but I guess if the intent and outcome is keeping an even playing field, then I'm for it. I will say, they should just have a functionality that enables 3rd party controllers to be used solely when offline, would solve majority of issues, with the exception of "always online games" of course.

Also it's kinda dumb if you think about it... there's so many different I/O devices for PC, and Micro$oft is going all-in with the crossplay... so once again PC probably has another advantage. GameSir G7SE works on PC too.

Yeah, even if this was some attempt to stop cronus users, most games are still at the mercy of cross play. So you could still see them through pc or ps5.

I'm not sure how relevant this is, but it's at the end of the article.
UPDATE: We've heard from sources familiar with Microsoft's plans that this may be related to Microsoft expanding its program for approved third-party wireless Xbox controllers. Most Xbox third-party controllers right now are wired.

Nah, most major brands like that are officially licensed for Xbox so they should be fine.

Microsofts lack of support for third party controllers has been pretty pathetic thus far anyway. The only decent controllers available are wired unless you're lucky enough to get an Elite controller that doesn't break within a couple of years.
The whole thing is obviously designed around them selling bucketloads of unreliable controllers though.

This is HUGE! If Sony doesn't do the same Xbox will be the place to play MP games. First thing MS has done in over 10 years that makes me think I need an Xbox.

will controllers like a $5-10 temu controller get banned? probably since its unlicensed but who knows, but people think detection won't work let me tell you my fukin mirrorless camera can detect whenever i'm using a third party battery and camera tech is like car tech, stuck in 2010.

Theres a reddit thread about it and alot of people feel this same way.

They are hoping it means Playstation will feel pressured to do the same.

I feel like it would be an easy yes for Playstation since they prefer keeping their platform and devices more exclusive anyways. And a big part of the PS5 experience is the dual sense features, so I doubt you see nearly as many 3rd party controllers on ps5 as you do on Xbox.

Realistically both consoles need to do this together for it to truly be effective against cronus players, if that's really even one of the reasons they are doing it at all.

Why? I know some controllers could be programmed with scripts to give people cheats where you press 1 button and do a whole chain of attacks. Is that why?

Cheaters are ruining PUBG. I'd get an Xbox just to play PUBG if they eliminate cheaters on Xbox effectively and PS just keeps fingering their butts.

Why would Microsoft do this?

Shouldn't they be making tons of money from their exclusives? Oh, nevermind.

Bruh, they own the publishing rights to the top selling games on Playstation lol

That and Sony only has an exclusive. Plural would imply there's more than just Spiderman.

Looks like Microsoft is trying to shaft the competitors from making their own electronics to steel the profits.

Like I said, electronics is where it's at, and the entertainment electronics are very competitive. It's a market I would not want to enter.
