Christmas Traditions

Now that Halloween is over, it got me thinking - what traditions do you have with your family?

I never really had too many growing up with my family that I can think of, apart from family coming over for a meal and my sister and dad and I used to go to the pub/s on Christmas Eve in our town and get pretty drunk.

When I was really young, my dad used to say he was going out to the shops to get something and he would get dressed up as Santa and come back into the house and pretend likes hes just stopped off to see how I am and I always thought it was the real santa hah. He used to put fake snow on his boots and when my dad got back "from the shops" i'd always be mad that he missed him every year lol.

Now my wife and I tend to watch National Lampoons Christmas Vacation every year (its hilarious and a classic), usually have a nice breakfast of champagne, smoked salmon, eggs and some other stuff then a big late lunch/early evening Christmas meal with family - same with Boxing Day.

Then it's usually just eating/drinking the leftovers between Boxing Day and NYE.

We only do "consumables" for gifts.

So stuff that doesn't exist physically.... Tickets to a show, food, lotto tickets, etc.

Also do a hike usually on Christmas morning. Live in Phoenix so it'll be like 70 degrees and sunny.

Great thread. Always really liked the ideas and traditions of British Xmas. I made a large English Christmas meal a few years back. Took me all day but the entire family liked it. Went to an authentic English/Scottish import store and stuff. Was lots of fun.

I loved Christmas as a kid in the 90s. My family was really working class, one working parent, one stay at home, so we didn't have much money and things were really tight, but we still thoroughly enjoyed the holidays. One yearly tradition that I've kept up is playing Mario Kart 64 with the family. I remember when the N64 dropped in 1996 and how incredibly exciting that time was. It's a throwback to that.
*Look at reflection in car window and flex every time crew*
*Use half the roll to wipe after a poo crew*
*Fart in the gym and blame rotten smell on faulty ventilation crew*
*Fart at home and blame it on the dog crew*
*Watch neutron-star density poop mock me as water flushes around it and it stays put crew*
*Drive 2 minutes in the summer and back of shirt gets completely wet crew*
*Coffee black as midnight on a moonless night crew*
*Fat shame my cat on a daily basis crew*

This^ might be the single most timeless and perfectly made multiplayer game of all time.

All of my cousins would play this game as a 4 player race, whoever got last place had to give up the controller to the next person in line for the next race. I didn't have N64 (PS1 CREW) so I wasn't very good, but every once in a while I could string together 1 or two rounds where I wouldn't have to give up my controller. We were still playing it through the late 2000's and we were all in our 20's lol. We did this every Christmas/thanksgiving. I imagine it still holds up.

I really dont care for the holidays. Not because I dont like them but I just dont like doing stuff of some timetable someone randomly made up.

It definitely still holds up. It's a gigantic difference as well going from a 4 player split screen on a fuzzy 27" CRT television to a gigantic flatscreen. It's like the television of yore has multiplied 4 times and now each screen is as large as the tv from our youth lol.

My buddies and I had once developed a drinking game called 'beeriokart.' The idea was we'd play 4 player and we'd each start the race with a full beer. The goal was to have the beer finished by the time you finished the race and your method of doing so was your own. The only rule was that your character had to be completely stopped for you to drink. We all used a few methods: chug it all at the very beginning and go, stop on the shoulder halfway through and drink, or stop just before the finish line. It was lots of fun.

Since my divorce my Christmas tradition is I go to my moms for Christmas Eve dinner, then my son comes over after his dads family Christmas Eve thing. He spends the night and wakes up with me on Christmas morning. We open presents, I make breakfast and we watch A Christmas Story and another Christmas movie if we have time. Then he goes to his dads in the afternoon for their Christmas.

I like this idea. It shouldn't be, but buying gifts for my side of the family is always difficult and people always have crazy high expectations.

What sort of food do you have in the US for Christmas? Is it Turkey normally? or is that more thanksgiving food?

We normally have either nibble type small foods as a brunch with mimoas or bellinis or champagne, or perhaps eggs and salmon for breakfast.

Then a later lunch with maybe a 3 bird roast, or turkey or lamb or gammon.

The typical Christmas dessert is Christmas pudding but I dont really like that so much, so its usually something else tasty. Man im hungry just thinking about this lol.

Sounds like you had a really nice meal though! Mariokart and Beeriokart sounds really fun! I dont remember much from the N64 except for Tekken and James bond golden eye lol

Yes, we get along fine for the sake of our son. They usually invite me to Christmas dinner but by then Im pretty beat from the holiday season and usually have to work the day after Christmas so decline. I still get invited and go to his families events.
