The rise and fall of John Cena
John Cena debuted in WWE main roster in 2002 in a classic promo and a thrilling match with Kurt Angle. With the Attitude Era over and focus being shifted away from Austin and Rock, WWE had four rising stars debuting that year Brock Lesnar, Randy orton, Dave Batista and ofc John Cena. Brock seemed the most dominant then winning the KOTR, beating the likes of Rock and Undertaker, winning the RR, beating kurt Angle (who was arguabally the most popular star after Austin and Rock left at that point) at WrestleMania. But then in 2004 he left. WWE was pushing Triple H like crazy between 2002-2005, while John Cena stayed in the mid card at that point (including his first WM title win at WM 20 beating Big Show for the US title), Randy Orton and Dave Batista were part of Evolution alongside Triple H and Ric Flair. Then in SummerSlam 2004 Orton beat Chris Benoit for the WHC and I vividly remember Evolution turning on him and HHH burying him time and time again 2004-2005. But when the beef between Batista and HHH came, things were different and 2005 royal Rumble who can forget the close contest between Cena and Batista yet Batista winning it showed he was destined to be the next Stone Cold Steve Austin, later he dethroned HHH at WM 21 and beat him in the classic Vengeance 2005 HIAC match (the last of its kind steel chain, blading it had it all, HHH looked like a villain when he almost hit Batista before the final Batista bomb). Yet Batista lacked the mic work and charisma and 2006 he got injured and instead of Batista the torch went to John Cena who dethroned the mountain Triple H at WM 22 in 2006 and that was the start of his 8 year run as the invincible face of WWE (they brought up the torch passing issue in their 2010 feud leading to their WM 26 match, Batista claimed it was supposed to be him but Cena became the guy), but Cena was all round better both in the ring and on the mic (the league of Rock, Hogan and Flair on the mic). Now 2006-2014 many criticized Cena as a spotlight hogging talent burier. But he was the highest merch saler, the most followed star, the face of the comnpany, how can they have him lose clean? despite this guys like Edge, Orton, Sheamus beat him "by unfaier means in scripted combat" and got over as mega heels through him between 2006-2009. yet I won't deny Cena single hadedly burying the whole Nexus in 2010 (literally TLC 2010 in a sinlge night, and also burying the leader Wade Barret)w as a dirty game. Yet Cena had the classic feud and two back to back classic matches with CM Punk at MITB 2011 and SummerSlam 2011. he ruined Rey Myserio's WWEC in a single day true, but seriously in 2006 when Rey Mysterio was WHC Smack Down which was superior to raw in 2002-2005 was at its worst, he just isn't world title material. Despite the Cuper Cena thing, the claim he sucked at wrestling and did only 5 moves was false as he proved time and time again, chronologically listing just 12 of many of John Cena's best matches between 2005-2016 that are some of the best wrestling matches not just in WWE but in pro wrestling as a whole:
1. John Cana vs Kurt Angle, No Way Out 2005
2. John cena vs JBL I Quit match, Judgement Day (it was rated TV MA for how much Cena bleeded, a rare feat even in Attitude Era)
3. John Cena vs RVD, extreme Rules match, one Night Stand 2006
4. John Cena vs Edge, TLC match, Unforgiven 2006
5. John Cena vs Umaga, last man standing match, Royal rumble 2007
6. John Cena vs Shawn Michaels 50+ minutes match, Raw , April 23, 2007 (best raw match ever)
7. John Cena vs Radny Orton 60 minutes Anything goes Iron Man match, Braggig Rioghts (say what you want about WWE being pg then, orton almost electrocuting Cena, the final brutal submision hold, the pacing, it was great and brutal)
8. John Cena vs CM Punk, MITB 2011
9. John Cena vs Brock Lesnar, extreme Rules match Extreme rules 2012
10. John cena vs Bray Wyatt, last man standing match, Payback 2014
11. John cena vs Antonio Cesaro, US Title Open Challenge match, Raw July 6, 2015
12. John Cena vs Aj Styles, SummerSlam 2016
And these are just 12, I could list a 100, he had the best matches ever at that time and he pulled out classic acrobatic moves + brawling + power housing, a true all round performer which is rarest of rare, and these are some of the best matches of all times.
People hated his lengthy regimes in 2006, 2007 then he had the shoulder injury. but he loved WWE and pro wrestling with passion.
But Cena returned the next year and won the Royal rumble but used the title opportunity at No Way Out where Orton retained by disqualification and lost the 3 way match at WM 24 with HHH and Orton and remained a low profile for 2008, until beating Jericho for the World Heavyweight Championship at Survivor Series. 2009 Cena vs Orton was the best feud of pg era (the time before Roman reigns era started in 2015).
2012 despite Punk being Chapmion for the whole year Cena main evented every show, and 2012 Cena vs Rock made WrestleMania 28 the biggest drawing WWE event in ages. 2012 they gave a feel good victory to Rock, but the next year they gave Cena his biggest win and Cena reached the pinnacle of his career beating Rock at WM 29 in 2013. He still had good matches with Bray Wyatt at WM 30 and the last man standing match at Payback 2014 and won the WWEC again after overrated midget Daniel Bryan’s injury, but that was the final spark. SummerSlam 2014 was the decisive blow, after Brock Lesnar literally buried John Cena on the historic day of August, 17 2014 after 16 german suplexes and an F5 that was the end of Cena’s reign as face of the WWE for 8 years from 2006-2014, as WWE shifted their focus on Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns as their biggest stars and Cena became a mid carder for the following two years and had three classic matches with AJ Styles at MITB 2016, SummerSlam 2016 and Royal Rumble 2017 and then Cena became a part timer.
Cena won his last singles match I think against Kane in 2018. After that its just been losses in singles matches and participating in tag team matches where he is not allowed to get the pin. After returning guys like Brock Lesnar and Goldberg were treated as monsters, burying full time young talents. But guys like Kurt Angle whom Vince and HHH had a grduge on (Vince actually loved him but never got over the 20098 statement when WWE asked him to join their rehab program, and Angle said he rather rehab on the streets), made Angle job to Corbin before retiring, and with all the credibility Cena built if they are to book him to lose, they ought to let real rising stars like Cody Rhodes and LA Knights, that would mean something but this year they made Cena job to geeky Austin Theory (whom some claimed was the next cena, but has quarter Cena's strength, he can never lift Big Show and Edge at the same time like Cena did at WM 25, Theoty has no skills at all at WM 39) and now the samoan fat Samoa Joe wannabe Solo Sikoa this Crown Jewel. This is absolutely disgraceful. Instead of having Cena in high profile matches to build mega stars that can actually shine they have been having him lose to jobbers and mid carders and Cena has not won a singles match in the last 5 years since 2018. Cena stopped being face of WWe back in 2014 and people who hated him started loving him in 2015 when he started the awesome US Title Open Challenge run and put over people. They should have built him strong giving hiom wins over wimps but making the guys with true potential beat him. LA Knight lost all his credibility after losing to Reigns now, had it been him vs Cena instead and Cena putting him over things would be different, but they put Cena in matches no one wants to see likle the Theory and Solo Sikoa matches, and 2019 Cena could have been Kurt Angle's final opponent but they shoved down Baron corbin and hurt tow legends like cena and Angle. Its terrible and heart breaking what happend to John Cena. Yes 2006-2014 he absolutely dominated the scene, but that doesn't mean he has to pay for it by not winning any singles matches since 2018 and losing to nobodies like Theory and Solo Sikoa. Those theory fan boys by now realize Theory is a failed experiment that I claimed here early this year, and losing to him only tarnished Cena's legacy, instead someone worthy could have lost to Cena. The way WWE has treated Cena is sad and heart breaking, love him or hate him he alone carried the WWE and made them money betwen 2006-2014 when he was the most recognized star ever. its so sad hwt they have done to him. he deserved the rock lesnar treatment, bein g dominant and winning mostl;y (against guys like Kingston, Strowman, etc) but lsing to guys like Reigns, Rollins and Rhodes when the right time came, then people could have benifited from beating someone like Cena and Cena's l;egacy kept intact. but now after Crown Jewel loss to Solo Sikoa John Cena's legacy has been tarnished for good!
