How does this run most current gen games?

For games like Path of Exile 1 & 2 and maybe ****ty old mmos (star wars galaxies private servers) will this work?

My original intention was to purchase a $250 analogue pocket for nostalgic Game boy emulation, but thats out of the picture now.

It's great if you go into it understanding it's limitations.

Want to fire up Fallout New Vegas and relive it? You'll love it. Play some stardew valley? Yeah.

You want to play Starfield? Cyberpunk? Don't expect much.

It's dope! I got the old top-end version and I think going for the new top-end version is definitely the way to go. Passing on this OLED upgrade though since I think it's just going to be a refresh update before we get some performance improvements. That said this is the perfect time for someone who didn't have one to finally get one.

Most games work great on it, I can even play some demanding games like Session and Forza Horizon 4 and 5 with relatively mid-high settings. You are definitely going to rely upon more mid settings though, but if you mess with the settings enough you can set a few things on relatively high settings with some great looking results (for a handheld). I don't think I'd want to use it like a Switch and hook it up to a TV though, as there's better computer hardware you can buy for that sort of dedicated task. The appeal of this is centered entirely on it's handheld capabilities.

Check out the Steam store and look for the Steam Deck compatibility information, it should be listed in the technical info on the right. Most "playable" rated games run great, they just give it that because you might have to use a virtual keyboard on occasion or something minor like that. The verified games shouldn't present any issues. Some games with lower compatibility ratings or none at all can run well, there's a lot of trial and error involved in getting your ideal library up and running, but after you do the work the results can be amazing.

Yeah true. I seem to focus more on older games and the latest and greatest high-end games usually aren't worth messing with. It's just amazing though to have a handheld that I can play games like Dirt 3 running smoothly with the settings all maxed out, 360 generation stuff is where it really shines IMO, but then you got games like Elden Ring that can run surprisingly well on it.

Yeah I was actually tempted to buy that, but then I realized I'd be paying about $750 for something I already have just because it's got that fancy look and a slightly nicer screen.

Love my OG Steam Deck, I also ordered an OLED (having seen how big a difference the OLED made w/ Switch vs Switch OLED).

I do not play particularly demanding games but it will run something like Baldur's Gate 3 without issue.

Power-wise, you're looking at a handheld that is probably around about the specs of a PS4. Actually, doing quick research quite a bit more. Ps5 is 10 teraflops of power, Ps4 is 1.8. Steam deck is 3.3-range. 16gb of ram, which I think outdoes the Ps5 (is it not 8?) Meanwhile, you don't have to run graphics high, though, with a 7.4" screen so you get away with a lot less.

My guess, you will have to fiddle the **** around a bit to get games like this running, but otherwise, what I like about the deck is how easy it is to pick up and play games. Emulation is also a breeze.

Yeah I mean I use mine, but not often enough to warrant spending so much on a slightly better new one. I still use my Switch just as much if not more, then I got my retro handhelds and stuff like the Evercade.

If I was to buy a new handheld it would have to be something to just play PS2, Gamecube, and Xbox emulation with. Having a Steam Deck as long as I have made me realize what games work best on it, which don't, and the type of games I generally like to have on it as well. At the moment, with my 512 internal and 1TB ssd, I got 100 games installed. A few of them are bigger/newer games like Forza Horizon 4 and 5 and MechWarrior 5, but it seems like the majority of my games are AA and older stuff from last gen or 360 era. I even got quite a few early 00's titles, but I only got so much time to game and I already don't play a lot of those nearly as much as I would like to.

I pretty much just use mine for "handheld" games. I've been enjoying this Japanese dungeon rpg called "Quester" on it.

It runs at the lowest settings 30 fps no problem, because it is essentially a game boy game. I don't like playing intensive stuff on it due to fan noise and short battery life. Deck for me is just relaxing. It's a great Persona machine too.

Yeah I can relate to avoiding anything too demanding for the most part, trying to push this thing to the max is generally not the best way to play games on it. I like to have it plugged in often due to it's bad battery life when playing any of the more advanced games, but I got loads of older and less demanding stuff that is great for running off the battery. Still, I prefer my Switch and retro handhelds for true on the go gaming, they just seem better suited to it. The Steam Deck just felt kinda big and demanding for something to take around with me, it's more of a portable to use at home IMO. Sort of a portable game console, like a more practical alternative to my gaming laptop, a more sophisticated way to game when you are staying somewhere and spending a lot of time there. I seem to use it the most when I am relaxing on the couch with TV or sports on in the background, so I also think of it as a relaxing game experience for me, which has definitely affected the kind of games I like to have on it as well.

So I think that's why I feel like just the one is all I need, it's never really been something I take seriously as a true handheld or travel console. It's why I'd rather go for something else for a more sophisticated retro gaming handheld even though I know it's very capable as one, I would simply want something more Switch sized or a bit smaller.

Advice: Get a PSPortal. Better graphics, bigger screen, MUCH better controller, better battery life, just better in every way.

My only regret with the steam deck is that I got this for my bday and one month later these fukkers release the oled version lmfao fml.



That said, its better going for the cheapest model and then slotting in an extra SSD for cheaper. I got the 64 gb version and put in a 2tb.

why tho if it can only run modern games at 320p max or 720p low and 30fps? the tech isnt there yet for handhelds.

Lowest res or framerate is still better than depending on wifi, playing at 150ms, and having lag and artifacts pop up on screen

How often are you in a situation where you're on the move and absolutely need to play videogames? If you take a lot of business flights it makes a lot of sense, but even then the battery life on the deck is trash, would run out mid flight if you started after check in at the airport

Lol wut the entire point of both of these devices even existing is that you are in a situation where you want to play video games but can't utilize your normal console or pc setup.

The most simple difference between these devices is the biggest. The Steamdeck doesn't need special circumstances to be able to game on, it's fully portable and stand alone. The portal simply can't function without good wifi, and of course ownership of a ps5. You can't even load a game to play offline if you wanted.

Emulation is pretty easy/simple to set up, you really just need ROMs. Something like Emudeck or whatever it was, incredibly easy to setup for all emulating I want to say up to PS3 with ease.

I don't know about the community. Unfortunately, reddit may be the best or most active one. You can get whatever information you need, you just have to suffer the usual reddit horse**** or bad joke karma farming, random unreasonable downvotes, weird mods, etc...
