Nobody will care about your "legacy" after your grandchildren are gone
As a matter of fact, by the time your grandchildren reach middle age and you've been dead for decades, you'll already be a distant memory to this world. Then when they're gone, your memory is truly gone.

But if not for you, there wouldn't be any grandchildren and beyond. Sure I don't know the name of my 5x great grandfather but he's the GOAT for continuing the bloodline despite how difficult life probably was then.

Generally we want our legacy to be something we built, perhaps a business, maybe a major and impactful act. To have your name permanently placed on a building for a deed or contribution. An invention perhaps. Considering generational changes and, not to get political, but less and less opportunities as a result of less freedom, this seems to be happening less and less. Used to be you could start a business with $100 and become a millionaire, but now you need thousands and thousands for licensing, permits, regulations, inspections, taxes…

People on this board like to rail on about how life is meaningless and worthless if you don't have children to carry on "muh legacy". My point is that it doesn't matter if you have kids or not; your legacy/memories mean jack chit regardless unless you are ultra famous somehow.
Maybe try stopping and asking a few questions/ask for clarification before putting words into other peoples' mouths. Just a thought.

Why are you afraid of it?
There is a philosophy many people use to find strength and inspiration in the fact all of this is extremely temporary. Which it absolutely is.
It isn’t something to be afraid of. From a certain perspective, it adds significant value to life.

And then my kids and hopefully grand kids will be able to make their own legacies and the cycle continues. I am a small part of a larger legacy and I feel really good about that.
I know my presence here on earth will ripple on through the generations. Tiny ripples but I am one of billions. I don't need other people to know my name or anything grandiose, I'll be dead anyway and dead men get no poosy.

OP is objectively right atleast for 99,999% of people.
Just do the simple test, what's the name of your great, great grandfather(s)?

Time does move on. I've worked on my family tree, and while many ancestors left little information about their lives, quite a few had quite a bit written about them giving a good idea of what they did and how they lived. My 6th great grandfather even had a joke he told recorded into the towns history he lived in.
