Would joining a sports league actually help make friends?

If I joined as an individual and they stuck me on a team? Anyone done this? Was it just awkward or did you actually make friends?

Yeah I play a few different sports. All are fun and all are social activities.

I tried it. They were nice at first but ganged up on me afterwards in the showers and did things to me. Terrible, unspeakable things.
