J Cole used all his best material on his mixtapes

His mixtapes songs are way better than his mainstream hits. The Warm Up and Friday Night Lights has his best lines by far.


Anyone else agree? I think he's the modern day Tupac personally. I'm a big fan of Tupac as well. J Cole has that magic touch in his mixtapes.

Sadly a lot of rappers from the 2000s mixtape era had better mixtapes than actual albums. Back when they were dropping free chit on Datpiff, they had full creative control. Zero restrictions from the record labels. Zero industry politics. Zero copyright infringement bullchit.

J. Cole, Logic, Papoose, King Los, Action Bronson, even Lil Wayne had their best material released on mixtapes.

It's because you can use certain beats and samples without permission on mixtapes and the label dictates what goes on an actual album

It's not the beats that make those songs. Its the lyrics. He should've just re-used all his lyrics from mixtapes into label made beats. I'm re-listening to The Warm Up and Friday Night Lights. His lyrics were on point with those two mixtapes.

Yeah he went hard on songs like Quote Me or The Come Up. No fuks given towards commercial appeal, just straight bars.

This. Same with Chance the Rapper and Drake IMO. I find myself listening to Room for Improvement or Comeback Season way more than his more recent work. A lot of these artists were seemingly hungrier in their mixtape days, grinding for a record deal. I don't know if it's the execs or complacency but they rarely have the same quality once they start dropping albums.
Do not think that what is hard for you to master is humanly impossible; and if it is humanly possible, consider it to be within your reach.
