US Gun Laws: pulled over with long gun in trunk

What exactly are you supposed to do when a cop pulls you over with a long gun in your trunk. Assuming it's locked in a container and locked in the trunk + ammo locked in the trunk too, but in it's own separate container.

When a cop asks if you have any weapons do you just say no (sounds illegal af)? Sources online say to remain silent, so do I just ignore what he is saying and hand him my license and registration?

In most states icluding ultra liberal ones if its unloaded and locked in a container in your trunk you're probably fine. Definitely check the laws though

If it's a semi-auto long gun then you might have an issue.. usually boltys are good to go anywhere.

If it's not loaded, then it's not a weapon...no different than a baseball bat you might have in the trunk.

I honestly don't know my rights when it comes to an unloaded locked rifle since everyone gives different advice.

My one friend told me to just be silent, and another said don't risk it and just tell the cops it's in your trunk and they will tell you to open it and take a look.

That blows if that's what has to happen.

Why would you say a bolt action rifle is not a weapon?

You'd say, yes, I have a firearm in the vehicle. If the officer sees a locked case theres no probable cause to inspect it. If you've got a semi-auto weapon laying in the back then he's probably going to think thats weird and youre not following transportation procedures and start getting in your chit.

I've been pulled over before, wasnt checked.

If you go silent or refuse to answer that's going to make them suspicious about you right off the bat and you'll probably end up being detained there for alot longer than you need to be.

Yea, I'm more inclined to believe if I just don't answer and just hand him my license and registration, that I will get my ass thrown in jail or some chit.

As above, specific laws vary by state. However, I'm a big fan of never answering a question that isn't asked, i.e. don't just blurt out the fact that you have a rifle in the trunk. But, if they specifically ask and you flat out lie or turn silent because muh rites, then you get what's potentially coming to you and that's on you. If what you're doing isn't illegal and you're not a complete douchebag about it, then you have nothing to worry about. If it's a super chitty cop just looking to bust balls, then you can address it in court should it come to that. Pleading your case to a cop who doesn't give a chit is like pleading your case to a ref in football that you weren't holding.

Yup. And more often than not I'm more interested in keeping it a minor inconvenience with 10 minutes out of my day, versus a major event I now need to deal with because I wanna stick it to the man by breaking out my pocket copy of the constitution to do a page turn reading with the traffic cop.

Depends on the state. Had a cop pull me over in Texas and told him my firearm was in my center console where my insurance card was, but he didn't even care. LOL at living in a state where you can't have your ammo with your firearm. What's even the point of the firearm if you can't be near the ammo? (Super Ded fkN Srs)

I’m just saying you could have bought a long gun from the factory, and it could be considered illegal in some state; if you don’t modify it to be compliant for that state.

I would rather exercise my rights;
If a cop thinks I’m being shady for exercising my rights that’s on him, I’m not responsible for their liberty but my own.

In which case you, as the owner, are responsible for following state laws, for whichever state you're in. Not the cop. If you don't like the laws, then you take it up with those who pass them, not those who enforce them. I have the right to march down broadway wearing nothing but tightie-whities and nipple clamps. Doesn't mean I'm going to do it. We're all different and different things hold higher priorities than others for each person. I'll pick and choose my battles as I see fit.

Surely the best way to do so is by explaining to the cop why he's wrong.

And sorry to say, I don't think saying that it's my own responsibility to understand and follow the laws while being a nonconfrontational respectful human being is considered boot licking. But, judging by how most of the misc feels about cops, I would expect nothing less.
