Anybody here actually know gems and jewelry. Specifically rubies.

I bought some earrings for my kid, and she likes them, but I read that the A ratings are total bullchit made up for marketing. I paid a good amount for a bunch of “A”s for her earrings, and no GIA certificate. Was I scammed?

I can post the certificate that they did give and pics if needed but would prefer to do so only if somebody actually knows this stuff.

I used to watch gem hunters on tv, it was super interesting. The main dude was kinda douchey and wore an ascot, but i still enjoyed it.

I’m reading that certificates mean jack if they aren’t GIA. It’s for a 5 year old so small rubies, and luckily I didn’t invest too much but still, it wasn’t cheap either.

I didn’t when I bought them, I took A ratings as the way they rate diamonds. I didn’t know it was pure marketing.

Ok so you can assume they’re glass or something. You’re not willing to get them graded or checked by a professional. You’re asking a bunch of random internet strangers to identify it based on a chitty video and pics.

Just assume they’re worthless and tell her they’re rubies. You won’t have to worry about them being lost.


And in the future, don’t fuk up like this again.

Well I know they are only heat treated, that’s common. 90% of rubies get that treatment. No lead glass filling. I called the company and they said it was just heat treatment, nothing added.

I don't mean to be a prick, but who buys expensive earings for a 5 year old? That's an age for wearing cheap bs practice jewelry. Wouldn't even think about getting anything spendier for jewelry until they achieve a few years of basic math, srs.

Weddings and special occasions. She has normal ones for daily wear. It’s a cultural thing too. I’m Indian and my mom gave her a bunch of expensive stuff for those occasions. 22k everything. This is the only piece I bought out of her collection.

I know about gemstones and rubies.

I mean I guess depends what you paid for them.

To be honest almost all rubies are heated and most are somewhat enhanced. Usually glass filled.


It’s fairly common to say heat only, but still have glass filled enhancements, but usually charge you the glass filled price.

Colored stones are tricky because how glass-filled it is affects the value.
I only dealt with the top quality stuff. $10,000s per ct. heated and unheated

There are better certs than GIA for colored stones, namely Gublin.

Those look like a nice deep red. So
I would probably be happy with them unless they’re synthetic.

They don’t really looks synthetic at first glance so i think you’re probably ok

Thanks man, yeah the place offered a synthetic option for less money, and I picked natural deliberately. Hopefully they are trustworthy enough to not mess with those options.

They made a big fuss about treatments that make rubies unnatural that they do not use on their site, and are considered legit as a company in regards to those things, so that isn’t a big concern to me.

02 in their description. The A ratings throw me off though, weird thing to use knowing it’s not worth much. They also refuse to specify the quarry, just said Thailand area.

Yeah, I doubt it makes a difference to her. For the record though they were about $1400 at 0.34 carats an earring, which I think would tank them if they used lead glass, considering their business model. That would be pretty toxic for them, as they are not Macys.

Well, for what it’s worth, I took them to jeweler who happened to be open today. He put them under some microscope with a light and said they aren’t filled with glass. So there’s that.

Edit: as Ausaric suggested, so credit goes to him.
