Anything close? And no “in game purchases” bullchit. I downloaded tactics ogre but it’s basically archer heavy, and making your whole team one class is stupid. I played disgaea but at some point it glitched and all of my saved files were corrupted. Not trusting that game again. Other options that aren’t multiplayer money traps?

While not as good as FF Tactics imo, Star Ocean is pretty cool and also by square enix
On second thought it’s not very tactical though. Still worth playing

If you have a switch, triangle strategy is pretty good
Fire emblem series is also great
But yeah Tactics is the GOAT so it’s a high bar to reach

At 8/almost 9 he is well aware that he dun goofed. His friends all have the switch and I won’t buy another.

I want to add, I played Fire Emblem as well. The toughest parts of it lead to the same mechanics for every player. It’s a logical result, but still a fail imo. Every class should have something to offer, especially when mastered. And mixing those into super soldiers just to stand a chance isn’t ideal imo. Every character ends up the same.

I just finished tactics ogre reborn archers are trash in it. Debuffs are king and certain magic classes end game. Xcom is good. One of my favorite series all time is called Valkyrie Chronicles. I think they remade and ported to PC also. It’s like Tactics with WW2 fantasy setting. Play classes like sniper, scout, assault, grenadier etc. true turn based is mostly a dead genre since Zoomies ADHD can’t play it. Closest modern day ones would be Pillars of Eternity or Divinity Original Sin

Haven't found anything remotely close to FF tactics. Let me know if you find something like that.
I have tried Valkyrie Chronicles, it was fun in the beginning but I lost interest and never finished it.
