Any other Civ nerds on the Misc?


I've been playing Civ games since 4 and honestly, 20 years later I have never ever finished one single game nor do I even know how to play it properly ... I think lmao.

That said, Civ 5 is an absolute gem of a game and it's still the one game that keeps making me come back to the franchise. I've dabbled in Civ 6, but I dunno, I just can't really stick with it like I can with Civ 5.


But the one thing that makes me stick with Civ 5 the most is the multiplayer. We've got a small little group going where we come in from to time and play it. The game is an absolute joy to get through with so much hilarity, friendship-ruining moments and all sorts of shenanigans taking place.

Still lol to myself at how one of my ****gggot cousins decided to attack my Civ, but I managed to start an embargo on him during the UN congress and turned him into a pariah, while making sure I was engaged in proxy wars against him without necessarily outing myself a warmonger hehe.

i've been wanting to get into a civ game for a while. Love how relaxing it is. But I don't have a gaming PC anymore. Anyone know how is it for Xbox?

i cant stand the CIV games even though I -love- strategy games in general. I adore Total War Rome II....


I tried Civ 6 and coudlnt be bothered to finish even -1- playthrough.


Why do you like Civ 5 so much?

See the op, the multiplayer is incredibly fun and the amount of shenanigans you can get into is hilarious.

The amount of backstabbing, the trade deals between each other, trying to get more territory, trying to play peaceful, trying to be warmonger with a diverse group of friends, every match is kinda unpredictable in how it plays out since its layouts are randomized. One match you could be at the top having access to the all the best resources, the next you're right there clawing your way trying to get the best possible locations and resources.

Like that MP match in the OP .... One of my cousins was warring with another civ and he asked me for open borders so he his troops would have easier access to them ... I held out for a while, but his incessant begging led me to make that deal with him, he marched his entire army across my borders and then immediately declared war on me right after because he thought I was an easier target ... Meanwhile I had absolutely no defences and a tiny ass army ... What I did have was a chit load of gold / resources and land, I'd have been brutally mogged and ruined, but I ended up convincing his AI neighbors to declare war on him so that he couldn't take over my lands. Next thing, the dude was embroiled in a war on 3 fronts while I was building up my defences and using my influence I managed to get him embargoed from all the other civ's so he couldn't trade with anyone and was bleeding out money. Had to privately convince our other friend to embargo his ass through bribes because my cousin was trying his best not to stop his trade routes from falling apart.

Then there's the other matches where me and my friends would have religious settlements and then start a religious war with one another, trying to get each others cities and our neighbor civs converted through missionaries, without necessarily going into an actual war.




As far as single player goes, every civ is unique, has their own bonuses , styles of play etc. It's just just a super cool feature, having your civ start out in the caveman era and then watching them grow into the space age.

hmm, so you have fun with multiplayer games. yeah thats a lot of fun.


but for single player, its just boring. the combat system is terrible, and the end game becomes really tedious.

much rather play Total War Rome II.... same map concept of building your civilization, but you get to actually fight the battles on a battlefield and use terrain, unit composition, anvil hammer tactics to win, even when outnumbered

Yeah total war is amazing as well ... and I think it's better suited to a sp game, however civ is pretty fun as a sp game as well IMO. More so on the fact that it's a pretty relaxing game.


Disagree on that last point though civ encompasses entire timelines, Civ definitely gives you more options for victory conditions whereas total war, like it's namesake is more geared towards battles .... While you can get into battles with civ, that's not the focal point of the game. As far as MP goes civ is definitely a lot more fun since the battles are quicker and turn based which means you can have a group of 4+ people playing at any given time.... But in total war you really cant due to the nature of real time battles.

Civ 5 is crack just like the others. "Just one more turn" turns into sunrise reeeeeal quick.Runs fine on console. I play on switch ffs.

I like Civ 5 for sure, on the other hand Civ 6 might be my biggest mistake when it comes to buying a game. Got about 450 (yeah sorry no 350) hours logged on steam. Maybe more before that pirated, I'm not sure.

Been playing Civ since 1998. CivII may have legit made me socially stunted, I was that obsessed with it. I legit had to give the CD-Rom to someone else in my dorm so I'd stop playing.

I think I once played Civ 3 for maybe 72 hours in one sitting once, with only taking time out for food & bathroom. My current self can't fathom that.

It's a shame modding never achieved the heights it did with Civ2. That community was massive back then. In any case I imagine I have about 1500+ hours total for the civ franchise
