I don't have children, so you can take this with a grain of salt, but I think the influence of parenting is more limited than most people realize. Someone's character--his/her intelligence, basic personality, self-control and ability to delay gratification, etc.--is more or less fixed at birth, and parenting doesn't affect it much unless the parents are really unconventional or they're abusive.

IMO, there are four main ways a good father can help his children:

1. First and most importantly, marrying the right woman. We joke about sloots gonna sloot, but the reality is that some women are much slootier than others, and different women will be better or worse marriage prospects. If you want your children to have good character, you absolutely should marry a woman with good character.

2. Protecting the kid from death and serious injury: suffocating, burning himself, becoming crippled or paralyzed, etc. when he's young and vulnerable to that kind of thing.

3. Choosing a good peer group. From age 5 onward, unless you homeschool, your child will spend more time around other children (and teachers) than with you, so do everything you can to ensure that they're good influences.

4. Giving them an advantage over the competition. If you can pay your children's college tuition or loan your son money to start a business, then they will have a huge edge over other people their age who are stuck wage-slaving and paying off student loans. But "giving them an advantage" doesn't have to involve money. It can simply mean offering them solid, realistic life advice so that they don't have to learn the important things on their own, the hard way. The advice will be more meaningful if the father exemplifies it in his own life.
