Some of you may remember me posting some car stuff here and there. Life is crazy and totally unpredictable at times.

So one chapter closes and another begins. We are officially starting a race team. My son will be driving nationally. We purchased a Spec race car and he will begin running SCCA 2nd week in Jan in the south east division.

Life is INANE and I never would have predicted this. It was not and was never my intention to get my son into racing. It just happened. His his skills in a car have become undeniable. When I am having pro drivers at track events we run and race team owners tell me he has true potential and I should allow him to race, it really is a crazy thing. So we are going to take an honest shot at this. It is a life upending commitment. The financial one is only a small part of it. We will be monthly now traveling all around the US in support of his racing.

For those of you that dont yet have kids, this is such an awesome thing as a parent to see your child do something they love. So now here we go!

I currently have 3 track cars but we just bought our race car sat and going to do testing in the car in Georgia next week. So I am going do sell off 2 of our track cars and keep our Lotus 211. (red car) That cant be replaced. Only 28 brought to the US.

The silver one was listed for sale yesterday and already sold it in one day. It is the most monster build you will ever find, but sadly something had to go. 420hp sequential trans sub 2000 lb car, fully caged race car. Just an animal on track.

New race car comes next week.

Truth is, life is good. Not because of money, but I am super lucky to have a great family. I am lucky to have every day with them as I was almost killed when my son was only 2 and my daughter 5. That will change your outlook for sure. My son who is my youngest is a great kid. Truly saying that, not just as a parent. He is a super kind soul. He does not give a sh!t about money or 'flexing'. We spend a TON of time together as father and son. Quite a bit is getting to enjoy car stuff together. It is a little stupid and over the top at times, but there is true fun in sharing something you love with your kids.

Captured a moment of pure car joy and this was too funny. My buddy in his SVJ w/ Gintani pipes on it screamed by us and my son was driving our 720. His response was priceless. Just fun things.

And to the point on money, no matter how much you have, it is never enough when it comes to racing. (unless you have hundreds of millions which I am not even close to that). It is hard work and it takes MANY people believing in a young talent to make it happen. At the lower levels of racing it is about 6 figures a year. ANY step up from here is 250-400k/year.

I am super blessed and humbled as I have already had sponsorship offers of people wanting to be a part of my sons journey. We have gotten to live a fun life. Since 14 he has been driving on track with many high level and even some pro drivers. This sport attracts quite a few people of means. Many we are lucky to call friends. So we are making the commitment as a family and will see where this takes us.

Worst case, we make some more great memories! And yes, I feel super lucky to be able to do this for my son.

Not mogging. Be just as happy for a dad that spends time with his son hunting and fishing. I dont like either of those other things, but I have really gotten to enjoy the car world. Lucky enough to share it with him.

Nope. M3. That is my buddies. Fully prepped race car. Caged etc. Awesome car and fun to run with him on track. Bummer he busted his diff in the first session out at our last track event of the year at VIR just before Thanksgiving. The little white lotus in the back used to be mine and I sold it to another friend. Cool I still get to see it on track! Fun little car!

Still here at BB.com because I still train even at 50. The day I stop training will be the last time I come there.

There still are things to learn, and more importantly for myself, bits to share with others about something that I love to do.

This pic was taken last week. Various injuries prevent me from training like I would like these days, but almost 30 years of collective training and no plans on stopping..... It is a lot tougher these days but I wont let age be an excuse to stop me. I will just do what I can to continue.

Yea he is a good kid. Over Christmas break, he is doing a motor swap in a friends car that blew his Lotus motor on track. He had some quotes from shops and after getting them, asked me if I could do it. (we have done 2 motor outs in the last few months during our builds). I told him I was not really interested in doing stuff like that for pay and he asked if he could hire my son since he has been working side by side with me in the garage.

His race school that was a requirement to get his license sign off was expensive. Almost 6k for 2 days. So I thought it would be a great way for my son to earn some of the money it cost for him to go to race school. So I gave my son his number and they worked out a fair price for my son to do the motor swap. They settled on $3000. So it is a great lesson for my son to learn that if you want to do things, you have to find ways to make it happen.

Of course I will be working along with him to make sure it is all done right, but making him take the lead. If we worked really hard, we could get it done in one weekend, but just going to knock it out over his Christmas break.

Only commitments we have will be a testing day in the new race car down in Atlanta and then we have to do a seat fitting for the car which will take us the better part of the day getting there and back and doing the fitting.

I grew up without a lot of stuff. I was not poor, but not well off either. I learned the value of hard work and we raise our kids the same way. Except for silly indulgences like our cars, we live pretty simple lives. Focus for us has always been on family. As parents my wife and I made every school party, every kids event, I have been to every soccer practice or dance practice for my daughter. We have built our lives around our family.

Even without money, I dont think our lives would change a whole bunch. As long as we have a roof over our heads, we will be happy. We have been on the other side of the coin as we pretty much lost everything in 2009/2010. I had to rebuild from nothing and even during the very lean years of life, they were some of the happiest I ever had. Great lesson to learn and keeps things in perspective.

Thanks man. That is kind to say. It goes without saying that I am thankful for every day I have. Some here may think this is just talk, but being presented with the real fact of death very early in my life as father, was in many ways a blessing. One of the things that I came away with after that, was I would make the most of each day and find something to be grateful for. It is not just talk, and probably does not always come through in posting, but life is truly wonderful.

Having kids for me was a mind blowing experience. So easy to lose yourself, and some talk about it like it is bad thing. But I long ago lost any desire for anything of my own, and lucky enough to have a wife who is even more selfless than myself. Family and some very dear friends are the most important things to me. Not much of anything I want for myself and I have found I get the most satisfaction out of living in service of others. Sounds corny, but it is what I have found makes me truly happy.

Yep. They have to set the car up for him and he has to learn the feel the car. Then adjustments are made to the car for how he likes to drive. He prefers 'loose' cars. They are much harder to drive and always wanting to walk out from under you or worse "snap", but they rotate the easiest and are fastest through the corners. "Loose" cars scare the sh!t out of me, but he is comfortable going up to, and staying on the ragged edge.

If you watch a vid of him running, you will see his hands are always moving. That is not shaking, that is him taking the car right up to the edge of grip and stopping it before it snaps, and pulling max g's in corners. He max's out at 2g here and holds 1.7g though several corners. I was a full 8 seconds slower than him in the same car at same track. I just cant push a car that hard or maintain the constant inputs to keep it on track. Really a cool thing to just watch happen and he truly has a natural gift for this. Just seems like it came out of nowhere.



His reflexes in the car are insane. In this short clip, the car fully snaps on him at 1.2 g in a corner at over 70mph. He reacts almost instantly with full opposite lock and then back again to 'save' the car. His hand movements almost look fake. I can tell you this, I would have lost the car and destroyed it into the tire wall. It is moments like this that realize he has a God given talent and I just have to let him have the chance to express that.

It is at the 9 second mark his 'big' save.

First off, hey kimm! Good to see you around! The crazy sh!t we do for our kids
And yes, this is very hard in many ways. In the two years we have been track driving, and the year plus he has been 'solo' there is an 'awareness' EVERY time he is in track. In my brain, I know how long it should take him to come around. I know the traffic he is with. No matter what I am doing, I am always on high alert looking for him each lap. Any time there is a yellow or red flag, your heart sinks and I want to puke and I try to look calm and wait until I can see his is OK. It is REALLY hard, but I cant let it get in the way of him doing what he loves.

With that said, I had a full FIA fire suit made for him, he wears fire resistant driving gloves and a balaclava, 'santa' is bringing him a new pair of nomex lined racing shoes. He wears an 'HANS" device on his helmet. All our cars have roll cages, full fire suppression systems, etc. But even with all the best safety, there is danger and bad things can happen. It is something I will do the best I can to deal with.

My wife was out at his F4 test and saw him in his element. She, as a mom, just wants him to be safe so I promised her we would take every possible precaution. But I think a commonality is every racing parent is nervous. Every time we are out at the track, we spend a lot more time over 100mph than under. Hitting 140 plus over and over and braking at the last minute to make a corner that if you missed by 1/10 of a second you would be off into the wall is pretty nuts in and of itself. It takes a special individual to be able to do this and to them, in their mind, they are totally comfortable processing at that high a level. They are relaxed and just reacting to the car. So I am sure there will be lots of anxiety from here forward, but anything we do will be done as safe as one can. Hard as a parent, but the realities of racing.

That would be pretty tough to watch. I have a friend who has his daughters in BJJ. He is always telling me how he has to work to not take it personally. I cant even imagine watching your kids do a combat sport! Especially my daughter

But totally understand that happiness you get to feel when you see them able t work hard and feel good about what they have done. My oldest is 19 and my son is now 16. Those days go by very fast. Cherish them and enjoy them! Good luck to your kids and may they be safe!
