Wagies - are you going to finally figure out how to make your own money in 2024?

Is this going to be the year? No e-brag, but december was my best month ever. Did almost 3x my normal volume, I bought inventory materials on credit. I was a little nervous, but 95% of it sold through already. I'm meeting some bros tomorrow for a BBQ, since I control my own time.

Meanwhile, all my finance buddies are working 20 hour days right now after missing the holidays, desperately searching for every last penny to give to Mr. Shekelstein before EOY, hoping and praying for a few scraps. And maybe a PF Chang's $50 gift card as a pat on the head.

Is 2024 going to be your year to get off Mr. Noseberg's plantation? What's your first step going to be? How are you going to get there?

My experience is in nano-scale electronics, which is about the most high overhead, top heavy business imaginable. Without a $150,000/yr simulator software, $2M test bench, or $2B pilot fab backing you up, you are dead meat. As the saying goes, "the first chip costs a billion dollars, the second one costs 50 cents."

Don't know how you strike out on your own in that field, aside from developing a software tool to sell to the big boys, and I don't have that level of coding ability.

In non tech fields, the only other way I can think of to sell my labor is tutoring. But that isn't scalable.

Finance is the same issue. Very little low hanging fruit for a solo entrepreneur. I tried to find somewhere where I could still use my technical skillsets, but be out of the finance bubble.

There are dozens of industries that use products tangentially related to nanoelectronics, that you are in a better spot than 99% of entrepreneurs to serve. You have to find one tiny market need, one little niche that you can fill. Doesn't even have to be unique or groundbreaking in any way (mine isn't).

Have an inspiring story for you, Ern. Know a guy who went to Harvard B school. His friends obvs went places like bulge bracket killing themselves to make 3 - 4 hundred thousand a year. Prestigious jobs. Good money. Miserable life.

This guy pooled some money from friends and family and some debt and bought a tradie business right out of b school. Like a purely chitty, embarrassing, non-prestigious tradie business

He has debt financed a bunch of add-on acquisitions. Recently took some mezz financing which bought out some of his own shares for $4 mil, just 3 years out of b school. He still controls the company and by todays valuation holds about $10 mil in equity. Will probably sell to some PE group in another couple years for 5x that.

So dude aleeady has $4mm in liquid cash all from something financed by other ppl. And he has been working like 9-5 normal hours.

The lambo guy who owns bb.com? Him?

I thought he pitched drop shipping, e-courses, amazon FBA, trash stuff like that. I always tell people to find a way to add real value to something, not just rebrand alibaba junk or whatever he does.

I like you Ernie, but IMO you have something of a “blackpill” perspective when it comes to employment/work. As we all know the blackpill stuff is not entirely wrong, but it is EXTREME and OTT.

You kinda remind me of BBMG actually, cept instead of getting bent out of shape about sex/dating, your thing is the horrors of being a wagie and having a Jewish boss etc etc etc.

The truth of the matter is that being an employee and working for a company is a mixed bag. There are some atrocious employers/jobs out there, but then there are also a lot of good ones. There’s also situations like FAPh4ggot highlighted whereby a person’s skill/trade does not lend itself well to going out on your own. There’s also the fact that it’s simply unfeasible/high-risk/unsuitable for everyone to go out there and work for themselves, and most people are probably better off finding decent jobs.

3x a tiny number is still a tiny number. If your business were actually successful, you wouldn't have time to make multiple Reddit-tier threads every day.

But if it helps you cope, go ahead and pretend that all the well-paid finance bros envy you and your Etsy store. lmao
