Any miscers experienced in selling cars. If so got a question

So I went to a car lot awhile back. Gave the salesman all my information and then I got a call and had to leave before I could even walk on the lot to look at anything.

Next thing I know I'm receiving letters from not just the company location I went to but also one of their stores in another city saying I applied for this car and that cat and this car and that car. About 4 different ones in total and my credit was ran.

Is that the norm? I went in looking for a vehicle and gave my information but didn't approve running my credit on cars I had no interest on purchasing.
