IMPORTANT Study: Bottled Water & Plastic Containers Are TOXIC to Brain & Organs!!!

Bottled water contains hundreds of thousands of potentially dangerous plastic fragments: Study

I want to get the news out to Miscers who are actually health conscious, and especially Miscers with children or pregnant wives. Throwing out my water bottles now and getting stainless steel.
https://thehill.com/policy/equilibri...h-risks-study/

Some Excerpts:

A new study has found that the average bottle of water contains nearly a quarter million fragments of “nanoplastics” — plastic particles so small they can potentially gum up the machinery of human cells.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The team was concerned by nanoplastics, which are particles thousands of times smaller — measurable in billionths of a meter. These smaller sizes can translate to greater danger, Yan said,“because the smaller the particle size, they are easy to get into the human bodies and then cross different barriers.”

The tiny compounds, Yan added, “can cross into the blood, and then can cross the different barriers to get into the cells,” interfering with the organelles — cellular organs — “and causing them to malfunction.”
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Micro- and nanoplastics can lead to “oxidative stress, inflammation, immune dysfunction, altered biochemical and energy metabolism, impaired cell proliferation, disrupted microbial metabolic pathways, abnormal organ development, and carcinogenicity,” the Lancet authors wrote.

But the water in the bottles was also found to contain a wide array of potentially dangerous nanoplastics that aren’t found in the bottles themselves — pointing to unknown sources of environmental contamination.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The scientists identified compounds such as nylon, which breaks down into toxic monomers as it degrades; polystyrene (or Styrofoam, commonly found in foam containers), which can break down into the suspected carcinogen styrene; and polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which can contain harmful additives such as lead or phthalates, and which has been linked to disruptions in the nervous or endocrine systems.

In what the researchers called an ironic finding, they also found plastic compounds in the water that matched the primary material in reverse-osmosis filters — suggesting that the plastics had leached into the water by the very process of filtration,co-author Naixin Qian of Columbia University told The Hill.

But themore dangerous particles like PVC and polystyrene seemed to have entered the plastic bottles with the “source water” that filled them, Qian said.

One possibility for how these may have gotten into that water: According to the Environmental Protection Agency, plastics plants emit aerosolized plastic gases that can get into the environment — entering the air, and therefore rain and water.

Excerpts from Longer CNN article
https://www.cnn.com/2024/01/08/healt...ess/index.html

In a trailblazing new study, researchers have discovered bottled water sold in stores can contain 10 to 100 times more bits of plastic than previously estimated — nanoparticles so infinitesimally tiny they cannot be seen under a microscope.

At 1,000th the average width of a human hair, nanoplastics are so teeny they can migrate through the tissues of the digestive tract or lungs into the bloodstream, distributing potentially harmful synthetic chemicals throughout the body and into cells, experts say.

One liter of water — the equivalent of two standard-size bottled waters — contained an average of 240,000 plastic particles from seven types of plastics, of which 90% were identified as nanoplastics and the rest were microplastics, according to the new study.

Microplastics are polymer fragments that can range from less than 0.2 inch (5 millimeters) down to 1/25,000th of an inch (1 micrometer). Anything smaller is a nanoplastic that must be measured in billionths of a meter.

That advice extends to otherfoods and drinks packaged in plastic as well, she added.

“People don’t think of plastics as shedding but they do,”she said. “In almost the same way we’re constantly shedding skin cells, plastics are constantly shedding little bits that break off, such as when you open that plastic container for your store-bought salad or a cheese that’s wrapped in plastic.”

Now that nanoplastics can be identified and classified, it’s possible to research the answer to all sorts of questions. For example, if the nanoplastics floating in the bottled water weren’t from the bottle itself, where did they come from? The Columbia team is investigating a hypothesis that the other nanoplastics may come from source water, perhaps tainted by some part of the manufacturing process.

Another important question: Which has fewer nanoplastics and chemical residues, bottled or tap water?

“Several studies have reported lower microplastic levels in tap water. Hence, it’s plausible to expect lower nanoplastic levels in tap water as well, considering their common sources,” Yan said. “We’re conducting research on that right now.”

What happens once the plastic polymer and the endocrine-disrupting chemicals enter the body’s cells? Do the invaders remain, wreaking havoc by disrupting or damaging cellular processes, or does the body succeed in kicking them out?

“We know these microparticles are getting into the body, and we know even greater percentages of the smaller nanoparticles are getting into cells, but we don’t know exactly where they’re going in the cell or what they are doing,” Stapleton said. “And we don’t know if or how they’re getting back out again.”

particles measurable in billionths of a meter and our stomach acid doesn't take care of them?

so bottled war is causing health issues and so is our tap water

guess its time to reinstall my ro water system

Fuks up your test too.

Just bought a countertop reverse osmosis machine so I don;t have to use bottles or normal tap water anymore.

Jokes on you papi, we’re already chock full of microplastics. I wonder what this is doing to us?

It took a long time to figure out the effects of lead. Lead is proven to drop intelligence, aka fukk with your cognitive function, and make people violent. It was in every pipe, and paint in America for a long time before this was discovered.

I bet in about 15-20 years we’ll discontinue modern plastic and find out it did some nasty chit to us too. Aside from the well known BPA causing a nosedive in test thing.

I've never seen water sold in glass bottles except for the fancy artisan brands you can buy from Whole Foods and Sprouts. Sodas, yeah, but not water.

And if the water in plastic bottles is harmful to us, does that mean everything stored in plastic is harmful to us? What if you use tupperware to re-heat food at work? What about virtually every condiment on the market (Dressings/mayonnaise/mustard/ketchup/bbq sauce/hot sauce etc) that are majorily stored in plastic bottles?

At this point, all you can do, is the best you can. As long as you're exercising regularly and not eating absolutely garbage fast food and doing all kinds of drugs you should have no problem meeting the average life expectancy.

Aware me on Reverse Osmosis Machine. Why/how is it better than other top-of-the-line filtration systems?

They've always known there were nanoplastics, but just didn't have the technology to figure out how much. It is 10x to 100x more than they had suspected.
This technology didn't exist 5 years ago.

We might not care, but this definitely will affect the quality of life of babies and children.

"As such, perhaps more significant than the findings themselves — which are alarming, but hard to put into context — was the way the Columbia University team discovered them: through a new method that the scientists say will allow them to identify specific nanoplastics in soils, the air and human tissue"

We still don't know how toxic nanoplastics are to the body (thats for further studies after this ground breaking one) but I wouldn't want babies or children drinking it constantly. Some things will be easier to avoid than others. Bottled water is easy to avoid, but that sour cream comes in a plastic container, prepared foods that come in a plastic container, etc.

All plastics shed over time, but when exposed to heat, or crunched, it increases the amount of shedding.
Bottled water, for example, the water is stored in the plastic shedding bottles over a long period of time until it gets to shelves. While it is being transported, its sitting in hot warehouses and trucks, then its constantly being crunched during shipping and use.

But the re-heating is particularly bad. Even screwing the water bottle cap back on and off is shedding more nanoplastics into your water.

Every water purification/osmosis machine i've researched has some list of testimonies saying its a scam and a waste of money and that "XYZ" water purification device is better, but when I look intoTHATequipment, that one is also rife with negative reviews.

and its not something you impulse buy or buy haphazardly. Those systems can easily run you $600-$1500

Just buy one and have your water tested. That will tell you how effective that particular machine is.

It's probably company reps trashing other brands, so people buy there brand.

Berkey? I use a ProOne gravity filter, so similar to a Berkey...supposedlya lot better/more effective though. Ultimately, no way to be sure unless you take an actual sample and have some lab do an in depth analysis, I suppose (even though they allegedly do that/have lab reports posted).

Water filtered through it does certainly taste a lot cleaner...for whatever that's worth.

you're fuked either way lol

You and your mother have already ingested so much plastic and other chemical toxins throughout pregnancy and your entire life. Stopping now is minimal difference. Also, you can't escape it. Most food is contained in plastic wrap. Unless you're going to make your own farm. The earth has these same chemicals that will leech into it in micro quantities.

And before getting stainless steel, be aware that most steel bottles are produced in Chinese factories. The steel they use in mass production in China is not good quality and studies have shown they contain many toxic chemicals that leech into the water of bottles, or from other forms of contact.

It's irreparable. Humans are fuked from toxins from the 60s, generation after generation, mother to child.

Just pray you've got the genes and a good enough lifestyle to tank it long enough.

Updated the OP with some more information. But if one is really more interested, read the articles that have full information. I was concerned with Miscers' attention spans so I only presented excerpts.

Plastics are from dead organisms so the body is accepting these toxins rather than rejecting and excreting it out, and they are so small that they are entering cells, they are crossing the blood brain barrier, etc.

Yea, they found nanoplastics in the source water itself, so you cannot completely avoid it. They theorize it could be plastics being emitted into the air during the filtration process, but all these new studies needed are only possible after this ground breaking study. For now, Miscers can take some basic precautions for themselves and their children.

Its not all or nothing. We can reduce the amount over the course of our lives. Certain products are worse than others (bottled water being particularly bad).

But like I said, the largest concern is from fetus to baby to child who have a weaker blood brain barrier (as well as the elderly).

Well, I know that Aquafina and Dasani (bottled water bottled by Pepsi and Coca-Cola) are essentially tap water with trace minerals added for taste (they basically admitted it).
