Doug Tracht, the radio shock jock known as the "Greaseman," was fired yesterday after a day of widespread protests over a racist remark he made during his Wednesday morning show. Several of Washington's black-oriented radio stations devoted extensive parts of their morning shows to criticism of Tracht, 48, by both deejays and listeners. And Tracht was fired from his position as a volunteer deputy sheriff in Falls Church after the sheriff there said he had received numerous phone calls. Shortly after 7 a.m. during the Wednesday show on Classic Rock 94.7 (WARW-FM), Tracht played a portion of a song by Grammy-winning black hip-hop artist Lauryn Hill and commented: "No wonder people drag them behind trucks," referring to the Jasper, Tex., murder of James Byrd Jr.

Many felt Tracht displayed a pattern of racist hostility. They recalled the 1986 incident in which Tracht, while a deejay at DC-101, made a comment about the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday -- "Kill four more and we can take a whole week off" -- that prompted pickets, bomb threats and canceled advertising. Friends and colleagues who have worked with Tracht, while not defending the recent remark, felt it was a slip of the tongue and not indicative of Tracht's beliefs.

You can't even make jokes on here without it being looked at as something weird or stupid. Much less in the nation's capital.

I actually don’t remember a time in America where making a joke about why >any race of people< should Be dragged behind a truck especially after a hate crime doing the same had already occurred.

Well maybe in the current times it would be ok to say about white people, but even then the backlash is beginning. Are you trying to imply that joke was a good one?

The whole point of freedom of speech is protecting this kind of speech. Good jokes and non-offensive non-controversial speech needs no protection.

Tasteless comedian but he was as big as Stern back in the day. One of the original shock jocks.

Yeah I would fight tooth and nail for his right to do that. But professional consequences etc..

I wouldn’t even cry if a bunch of my misc comments got taken out of context and posted on a business I owned reviews etc.. that’s the bed I built and I can either defend what I said or not.

He isn’t going to jail, he’s facing the consequences about joking about why racist murders are ok right after someone was murdered that way for viral marketing or cuz he’s a dumbass. Either way you should know how obsessive people are about their psy-oped news cycles and he clearly did for trying to utilize the pluses of shock viral marketing. Well this is the negative, you really piss some people off, a lot of people turn that into profitability, he turned it into losing his job. But maybe people like you give him another platform who knows.


Either way he isn’t getting arrested and the joke was absolute disrespectful dog chit.

And I’m really not saying that because I don’t like the guy, I’m saying it as an observation about how he has been acting the past 5 years.
