Would you consider moving far away abandoning family?

If your family was all centered in one area and then you and move across the country because you like it better there, would you consider that abandonment?

Or is it too complex to be a simple yes or no?

different elements to consider. Why shouldn't family be understanding and supportive of you to live in a place which is your DREAM destination? Or how about the family relationships, are they good or not-so-great and why?

No and don't let them guilt you into thinking that.

Ask me how I know.

This. Except the asking me part.

If I could afford it, I would. I’d love to move to a new city but I like my job and the thought of searching and all the logistics to make it happen is exhausting to me at this point. But I’d have done it years ago in a heartbeat.

Kind of happened to me. My brother moved to Texas and that was prior to my parents moving into the town where he was living. We are all about 6 hours spread out from each other.

I did, it's a part of life.. parents/sibling are in Texas, I moved to NY.

Shouldn't be limiting your life like that.

I had to pay and organize for them to come visit me....the whole time they were there it was nothing but "I don't see what you like about this place" type of chit.

There a whole long story about my growing up and being controlled, emotionally manipulated and guilted into doing chit and when I had the opportunity to leave, I took it and never looked back. the girl I was dating at the time kind of opened my eyes to how "under their thumb" I was at 21 years old and for that I will always give credit to her. I loved that city and what it did for me.....allowing me to grow and find out who I really was when I wasn't under the control of my parents, experienced a new culture and way of living, just so much.

If you have the opportunity to move, travel, get out and live in other places....do it.

I did exactly that when I was on the cusp of turning 20. One of my siblings was far away but otherwise everyone else including secondary family were near where I grew up. I'll never understand why so many stayed in a schitty area. Fear of the unknown, I guess. I'm not against the idea of doing so again in a few years.

Lol none of my family ever gave a chit about being close to me, or to each other for that matter.

Too complex. I currently live about 3 hours away from my family and where I grew up. Easy enough drive honestly and see them every 2-4 weeks on average, so not exactly earth-shattering. But I wouldn't want to live much further than that, unless there was a very good reason.

I'm looking to move about 5 hours away and my family is giving nothing but the guilt trip.

I have their only grandchild, so it's somewhat understandable but at the same time, my wife and kid are ready for something else.

did it in 2019. dont regret it. just make sure to have a job lined up or a chit ton of cash.

just dont go there without a plan. make one and stick to it.

the later in life you get, the more risky the move becomes IMO. way less at stake at 25 than 35 cuz by 35, you REALLY need to have ur chit straight so the margin of error, moving to a new city, becomes way less.

Your kid won't do better being away from family than being closer to them. I'm not saying that means you shouldn't move away from your family. All I'm saying is not to delude yourself into thinking it's good for the kids, because moving is literally never about the kids lol
