Burger King's owner is buying the chain's largest franchisee for $1 billion. It plans to flip 600 restaurants and sell them to 'motivated' operators.


Burger King's owner is buying the chain's largest franchisee in a deal valued at $1 billion.

Restaurant Brands International plans to invest $500 million in remodeling 600 Burger Kings.

The move comes as Burger King has pushed for remodels of top outlets while closing others.


"We believe this transaction supports the broader Reclaim the Flame plan by accelerating the brand revitalization efforts already underway while also filling the Burger King remodel pipeline with stores that offer strong and improving operations," Long wrote in a note.

The acquisition comes as Burger King has struggled with relevancy while rivals such as McDonald's and Wendy's have made gains with consumers through nostalgic marketing campaigns and the introduction of breakfast, respectively.

Burger King has been trying to refresh the brand for a few years. In 2021, the chain its overhauled logos and branding for the first time in 20 years, returning to a classic look emphasizing the Whopper and natural colors.


I'll be interested to see what they become. I used to love BK back in the 80's and 90's, but now they are just trash.

They've literally never ever offered that and done well. Calling that chit "food" is a stretch.

Issue is the cost
The costs are out of control and the reason they bought out that large owner/owner group is because that group was not investing in the business. They were not reinvesting to keep costs in control
Average store has a net of 175k a year. How much money can you put into the business when you are only walking away with 175k?
This will fail because BK needed to put all this money in upfront to buy them out plus they need to find people who will buy in AND invest more money year over year for 175k ?
Probably also a power play for BK for more control. The future agreements will be stronger on BKs side and weaker on operator. Going to be hard to find successful business people. They maybe going for the Amazon fleet deal (scam) and get some suckers to take risk/spend hours and hours running for nothing

Those really are some razor thin margins.

If they redesign them to have comfy seats and wifi with coffees and that drink fountian with free refills like a cafe, that might work

Burger King was the GOAT fast food in the 90s and they dropped off. Fix their fries/drinks and fix the quality control. Revamp a few menu items and hire good employees.

A whopper with cheese is $9 where I’m at. I can get a double bacon from 5 guys for $$4 more.

BK actually is pretty great if you get the right cook and everything is fresh. I did a taste test with them and 5 guys once and was surprised how good BK tasted (esp considering the price).

Every BK around me has closed or is on life support. In-N-Out, Panda, Mcds got lines wrapped around the building while BK has 1-2 cars.

Yeah, I think the last time I had it was like 6-7 years ago and I was hammered. I just vaguely remember that I think they had Onion Rings, which gives them a slight boost over a lot of other Fast Food places.

Most of the underpreferming BKs are in terrible locations or are poorly operated. I eat there maybe 1x per year, but would definitely go there more if they had a decent product at competitive prices. It's a lot better than McDonalds.

They went woke, their food quality declined, and they increased prices.

Who tf wants to pay $12.99 for a BLM burger or 14.99 for a trans sandwich

I had McDonald's a couple days ago for the 1st time in about 4 months yesterday, and it's fuking terrible. Could very well just be a bad location, but even with only paying $3 for a couple double cheeseburgers I have no interest in going back anytime soon.
