How to become a bartender?

Thinking about trying to get a job bartending part time on weekends. Honestly feel like it might be fun. What does one do to become a bartender though? How do I get started?

Where the f*ck is nonsense when I need him?

You’re probably gonna have to start at a place like Red Robin. Chances are though anywhere you go you’re not gonna get the weekend shifts you want. There’s a hierarchy and the hot females and high seniority folks will take those high dollar shifts.

It’s hard to get the first job as a bartender. You might have to tell a little fib about your experience and learn how to make the most popular drinks at home. Watch some videos because there’s a certain way bartenders do everything from fill glasses with ice to mixing and even pouring beer from the tap. If you don’t know how to do those things you will be spotted right away as a fraud.

My first bartending job was at a dive bar where drunks would sit there all day drinking tiny taps of beer one after another. Like why not just get a pint? No they had to have their little juice glass sized beers about 20 of them one right after the other.

Edit: oh yeah I just remembered the tiny taps seemed cheaper than the pints. If you added them up they really were not, though.

Bartender here.
Experience.
Get your foot in the door however you can, starting in some other place, which may be in a less than desirable capacity and/or establishment.
Get RSA (in Australia required to serve alcohol) - I imagine other places have something similar.
Dont think it's going to happen immediately, that would be too autistic.

unless you have experience you might have to start at a crappy bar as a barback and just let your coworkers and management know you're interested in the position.

Start as barback somewhere and eventually they will promote you. Or if you start at some place that only serves beers to get your feet wet.

So, the first step is to figure out the kind of place you want to work and the lifestyle/hours that go along with it

Especially as you already have a career you probably want to fit this around

Usually means a restaurant that has a bar - like chili-bees-fridays, or a similar small business

Vs

A bar or nightclub


Restaurant has more normal hours and lifestyle, usually not open past 10pm-midnight

Bar you’ll be heading home about 3am most nights you work


Both types you can make a lot of money and have a lot of fun, or you can get shafted a lot, or both, depends entirely on the place you work, the management, the customer base, and your coworkers

How to get started

At a restaurant, unless they are hiring with no experience which is rare, you’d probably need to be a server first for a little while and express interest that you want to learn how to be a bartender

This is fine, being a server can be a lot of fun too and it can be a lot easier than being a bartender


At a bar, places will hire people with no experience (but usually with some kind of connections or recommendations) to be a bar back

This means you help the bartender with a lot of the basic work, and learn more stuff as you go to try and become a bartender eventually



Absolutely under no circumstances go to a bartending school or course


Things to note about either, extremely high chance of:
-coworkers are banging each other
-preferential treatment, abuse of power, and nepotism, especially for hot females
-tons of drama
-moderate to heavy drug use and alcoholism all around
-interact with a good amount of scumbags both coworkers and/or customers


And then there’s other cases like golf courses, country clubs, hotels, which can be a mix of both and anywhere in between

Once you're confident enough, the customers are no problem.
The co-workers will always be scum and a problem though.

Hate to break it to you OP but you comer off as someone who has Asperger's. This is a customer facing job. If you want to work in a restaurant or a bar you are the dishwasher or bar back.

thats a good idea. I worked as a server at a restaurant similar to that. all imma say is being handsome and a server/bartender is so much fun. too many females hitting on you. too many. it was like being a kid in a candy store

You don't lie unless you literally don't give af about the job, but I wouldn't recommend that attitude for bartending cuz it's actually hard work and not at all a job you can just coast in.

If you want to connect with them without lying (meaning you actually have to do this) then tell them this in your cover letter:

"While I haven't worked as a bartender professionally, I've been actively learning and practicing mixology at home and have amassed quite a collection of spirits in doing so. I consider myself to be highly teachable and adaptable. You'll find that I am extremely passionate about mastering the trade, and I am confident in my ability to bring enthusiasm and energy to your team."

^ Use your own words if you want to add more personality.

Learn a handful of classics as well as at least 1 difficult cocktail to show that you are dedicated to the craft, something like a Sazerac or an Aviation (or whatever is more popular in your area).

Once you've done that, as well as sending CVs out, call up a few bars directly and see if you can get a trial shift straight up.
