New fishing related "hobby" I've been doing

Over the past few years I got into musky fishing pretty hard. Decided to make my own lures.

The biggest are 18", hand carved out of cedar. Air brushed, internal through wire, stainless mirror polished diving lip, and three coats of epoxy.

I sell to both collectors and guys who actually use them.

Small ones sell for $150, and the big ones about $350.

I figure about 6 hours for one of the big ones.

Its hard to calculate, because I might rough carve and smooth 15 lures all at once, then go through all the finishing and painting steps.

When the epoxy coat goes on, you have to turn the lures constantly till it dries at about 4 rpm, otherwise it will drip. In the pics you see a few lures screwed to a 4 rpm motorized lure turner I made, so it takes two minutes each coat to apply the epoxy, then it needs to slow turn for about 6 hours while the epoxy cures.

Painting takes as long as I want it to, but its not unrealistic to take 3 hrs to paint a big one. One or two if I have done the pattern before and am just replicating it.

That’s sikkk brah. These look amazing. I’d love to try something like this but for bass fishing. I’ve looked into the soft plastic molds for things like worms, creature baits etc.

Dang, very nice. Works of art. I can see why they cost a lot with the time investment to make them.

I know for a fact that if I paid 150-350 for a single lure, one of my first casts would be in a tree or the lure bit off by something big. Seems to be the case with fishing lol.

haha.

I know guys who have dove in to get them back. Also, they make a lure retriever thingy that slides down the line attached to a rope, grabs hook on the lure and you get it back, sometimes snag attached

Its kind of an art form for me, with the bonus that I can catch fish with them.

I was never an "artist" in the traditional sense, and never wanted to be, but I really enjoy making something that functions well, and looks good.

When you make something you only see the flaws...I always say that one day I'll make one that I will actually be happy with haha

Musky fishing always seemed annoying to me with the boat side figure 8's. I get the feeling that if you don't do that every time you'd never know if you missed a chance at a following fish, but to be sure and do that every time makes it more about doing figure 8's than anything else. Mental battle similar to still hunting where you know you should check every game trail, but you'd walk aimlessly for miles if you did that.

Use braided line. It will pull the tree out of the ground and you’ll get your lure back.

Cool maybe you can source a giant sequoia trunk and whittle a replica of the himalayan fart trout I discovered floating in the gender neutral bathroom commode at my local chipotle the other day I mean the htc lady that managed to waddle her way into the bathroom toting that thing in her caca canal really should be looked at with at least a small amount of appreciation just out of respect for thumbing her nose at the principles of physics alone now that is probably wasted on the poor custodian who had to aggressively and probably unsuccessfully plunger the clogged toilet with his jodeci live in Anaheim 1994 fake silk tank top pulled up over his nose but hey who am I to judge

It is a pain, but if I had a nickel for every time I didn't do it and saw a fired up fish at boatside looking for it...

You choose cedar for specific reason or just because it's readily available?

It has a lot of good qualities:

very water and rot resistant if the lures finish is compromised
the right density
soft enough to work easily with hand tools and power rasps
hard enough to avoid denting and fish teeth
available with zero knots (clear) so it is a consistent material
smells nice when carving haha
I get it for free through work generally. Cutoffs and the right size pieces for lures.

Mirin, I used to tie flys. It’s the best feeling catching a fish on a fly/lure that you made yourself.
