I know two people that have done it. One spent 80K unsuccessfully the other spent about 120K and it worked and they have a healthy baby. Neither of them regret it. For the couple that never had a kid it was worth it for the chance. For the other couple it was well worth it for their kid.
You can call them a loser but the truth is for people that do this its typically chump change. If you really wanted something that you couldn't have. But could drop $10 on basically a lottery ticket that might allow you to have it. Would that $10 be a waste of money to you?

I'm convinced part of the reason some couples can't have kids is because they obsess about it all the time and stress themselves. Had friends who tried for years and spent tens of thousands on fertility, then went overseas and adopted, which cost them like 100k.
A year later because they weren't worrying about having a kid, she got pregnant naturally.

I used to work for CIGNA and I was the infertility claims specialist. It was pretty sad talking to most of the customers who were dealing with infertility. There were limits on how much we covered and the women would be all stressed out and crazy due to the fertility drugs they were taking. One woman threatened to come shoot me because they'd met their limit or something wasn't covered.
