How did they get TVs so thin?

The first image is your standard tube TV.. the next is a plasma TV from maybe 2015??

The third is my TV with the pen illustrating how thin it really is. (The pen is wider than the side of the screen)

What kind of sorcery is this?

You're making it look much thinner than it actually is with the weird angle of perspective in that pic.

That first TV was something you would have found in stores 25 years ago. You're surprised tech has moved way past that?

the first crt TV has the flat screen, which was the high end / last ones to be made, they made those up to like 2008/2009. I remember my first LCD TV, it was like $500ish for a 32" 1080p that was in like 2010 and i remember being amazed at it back then, it was so "big", was a good deal and "high resolution" compared to all the 720 TV's. That TV still works and just used as a computer screen basically now at my moms house

I think there is dimenshing returns but they know that is a selling point to people, its not like you are saving any space if it is an inch or a centimeter thick it takes up the same space in your house. They cant even put decent speakers in anymore so you got a whole generation of people who watch TV with CC on all the time.

Oldies were the best. My television now is 24 inches-when you watched these things for decades giant televisions just look weird.

yeah theyve been messing with foldable/rollable screens forever. i remember reading about them in the late 90s in some magazine like popular mechanics or some chit. basically had prototypes in the labs even back then but it was too fragile/expensive/low yield ect to mass produce.

makes me wonder what they got in the labs today. they already got 3d holograms and chit, who knows what they got that they havent released in the labs now.

yeah and it gets worse they are making the tv boxes more and more towards a one time use which is annoying. 2,000 dollar tv and they jew you like that

weird how people can be so obsessed with tv tech. i haven't watched a tv in my lifetime where the clarity or lack of thinness distracted from what was on

Why were they ever so fat is the real question.

Because the CRT electron gun had to be distant from the screen in order to shoot electrons all over its surface.

Once you replace that with in-screen illumination naturally they become much flatter.
