To elaborate, I don’t mean what will make you richest, or alpha, or any of that. What would give you the happiest outcome of your life?

Anytime we talk about someone being strong, that one thing is required.

Obviously physical strength exists but that is irrelevant to anyone not in a gym. I doesn’t actually do anything for you and there is a point where in order to keep getting stronger, you have to become unhealthy. So I agree it is about mental fortitude.

So if strength and emotional regulation are interchangeable, which I would suggest they are, then that one.

The one thing that nobody works on.

It is a super power.

We can all have it.

The only absolute loyalty anyone should have is to themselves. Every other relationship loyalty should absolutely be conditional.

I would suggest selfishness and emotional regulation are pretty close to being equal at the top of this list for achieving happiness.

And I think everyone should develop emotional regulation for themselves, and be relentlessly selfish.

You really did do your stoic studying.

The offender needs pity, not wrath; those who must needs be corrected, should be treated with tact and gentleness; and one must be always ready to learn better. 'The best kind of revenge is, not to become like unto them.'

Or maybe you learned it in other ways.

I am not familiar with that quote, but it does resonate with me. Who said it?

Not always. For example some of the strongest people imo were those who stood up to the covid madness when it was the most difficult to. When society wanted to lynch you for following common sense. People like Malone and McCullough. Most people folded or were quiet like cowards.

It comes down to Marcus Aurelius way too often.

I don’t care about political opinions. That isn’t strength. Everyone has them.

Introducing politics into a topic about self development is inane man. Paying attention to politics, and having opinions about it, is one of worst things any of us can do for our happiness.

Having opinions in general is a huge source of our unhappiness. That idea is magnified when discussing politics. And it is pointless.

I have read Meditations a couple times. Of course he is credited (incorrectly) as being the father of stoicism. Not that the title or accomplishment matter from a stoics perspective. I know what you mean by “way too often” lol.

Of course I do appreciate his contributions to the philosophy, they are significant.

Emotions are what makes us human. So they do have their place.

Emotions provide valuable information.

Emotional regulation is important so you can think and see things clearly.

I feel like all the options are relevant. I imagine as the thread goes on, you will get a good mix of the answers.

Resiliency but that probably falls under the umbrella of strength.

I understand this. It reminds me of some old quote where you can’t forgive without power. Only the strong have the power to forgive, otherwise it is the same as cowardice. It had me thinking.

It seems that many of these traits are interconnected.
