Another Oakland business near the Hegenberger Road corridor has permanently closed over concerns regarding rampant crime in the troubled area.

The Denny’s restaurant, located at 601 Hegenberger Road, shut down for good on Wednesday, KTVU’s Henry Lee first reported.

The restaurant cited the “safety and well-being” of Denny’s customers and employees as its reason for closing after being in business in the area for 54 years, according to a statement from Denny’s provided to SFGATE. Denny’s employees who are able to relocate will be offered employment at other available restaurants, the business said.

SFGATE called the Hegenberger Road restaurant and did not receive a response.

Denny’s is one of several businesses to cite crime as a growing concern for business in the area off of Interstate 880 near Oakland International Airport. Last month, a busy In-N-Out located on 8300 Oakport Street, approximately 1 mile away from Denny’s, said it will close permanently on March 24 due to crime.

A spokesperson for In-N-Out previously told SFGATE that customers and employees experienced regular car break-ins, property damage and armed robberies. The restaurant was Oakland’s only In-N-Out location.

A Shell gas station located on 285 Hegenberger Road, about a mile from the Denny’s, has also become a hotspot for auto break-ins. The Oakland Police Department previously told SFGATE that 271 auto burglaries, 15 robberies and five instances of vehicle theft occurred at the station in 2023.

Police told SFGATE that the station’s close proximity to the nearby freeway may make it a target since it allows a quick getaway. Thieves have also frequented the location since its short distance to the airport’s rental car center makes it a common stop for tourists driving rental cars filled with luggage.

A large portion of 'armed robberies' are people on foot too. Majority of perps probably live or are 'staying with someone' within a 15 minute walk from the location.





How fukked are your states politics when you can't even sit down for 20 minutes at Denny's to enjoy a meal without the windows to your car getting smashed and it getting looted?

LOVE this. The time has come to create food deserts, pharmacy deserts, gas station deserts, medical deserts in all these areas until they get it through their thick skull that you can't just keep robbing from businesses without an eventual response.

Pressley, a member of the ultra-progressive 'Squad', said the chain was 'abandoning' low-income communities with the most recent closing in Roxbury on Wednesday.

Walgreens announced the closure of several stores nation wide due to what the company has described as 'rampant theft' in some areas.

Pressley said this decision targets areas with significant minority populations, calling for the company to reconsider their decision instead.

In a speech addressing the house, she said: 'This closure is a part of a larger trend of abandoning low-income communities like the previous closures in Mattapan and Hyde Park, both in the Massachusetts 7th.
