Why is chain pizza still so cheap?

Here in NYC, a slice of pizza typically goes for $4.

I ordered Dominos yesterday and got an entire pizza for $8 (pan pizza).

The calorie difference for two slices vs an entire pizza is probably 800 calories vs 2500-3000 calories.

Even with Pizza hut it's not much different, maybe $13 for a stuffed crust which is 2500-300 calories.

Is it just economies of scale?

Because the quality and size went down and they went to a fully volume business. It only costs like $1 to make a pizza for them, so there’s still plenty of profit at $8.

I haven't noticed any loss of quality or reduction in size, its still great pizza

No def not lol. Didn’t you come to LA recently? It’s about $30 for a large pizza there too. Round tables is like $40+ for a large pizza when you order there. I went to a rural town in the mountains with my family last weekend, got 1 large and 1 medium pizza, 3 drinks, and it was $87 without tip. Dine in.

Dominos for sure is lower quality…. They now make all the dough offsite and deliver it in trays, so you’re eating 3 day old dough that is much drier in the finished product. They also use less cheese.

I can’t be bothered to look up if this is actually true, but I highly suspect that the pizzas have gotten much smaller

The area of a circle increases quadratically with the diameter. So a small dip in diameter affects the amount of food you are getting by a lot.


A “large” pizza from dominoes used to be a lot of food for me. I can eat one in a single sitting if I’m really hungry now. Used to only eat half if I was really hungry. And I weigh less than back then too

Dominos by me seems more expensive than the local spots. Initial pizza and coupons look good but unless you can take advantage of one it's an expensive pizza.

New haven pizza mogs it anyhow.

Dominos and the lesser chains are the largest buyer of dairy in the US.

they are subsidized by
1) the suppliers and
2) the govt. your taxdollars...srs.

the more shocking and true question is that how do mompop pizza survive. unless portnoy comes in and blesses them.

Yeah I don’t go out hunting for them. But a large pizza here from these chain stores has been $20+ for like 10 years without deals or coupons.

They are all lower quality than in the past. Papa Johns and Pizza Hut are legit horrible. Dominoes is still decent but only if you get multiple toppings on the pizza and extra sauce.

srs? the margins are insane on the mom pop places in NJ/NY/CT

chitty decor and old af building with the sign peeling off is not only ok, but expected (no need to make it fancy or anything), so rent/building costs cant be THAT high

each pizza is like 2 dollars of ingredients

have a bunch of illegal migrants making the pies for money under the table (no benefits)

strong recurring revenue from repeat degenerate customers who get pizza like 2-3 times a week

I honestly want to start a pizza place

Dough is just flour, water, salt, and yeast. They don’t even use imported Italian 00 flour which isn’t that expensive but reg flour. It also suppose to be fermented for multiple days so being “old” like retard miscer thinks isn’t a bad thing. Pizza sauce is just canned tomatoes and they probably aren’t using San Marzano which isn’t expensive either. 1 can has enough sauce for like 10+pizzas. Most expensive part of pizza is usually the cheese depending on the quality. Pizzas are cheap af to make and you’re being robbed if you’re paying $20+ for a pizza

ill be honest when i was younger i could eat whatever pizza and wouldnt notice any difference. but in the last few years ive really noticed the cheaper places wreck your gastro way more than some of the more expensive options. not sure if its them using cheaper ****ty dough ingredients or if its cuz they literally cook their pizza in oil but its super noticable.
dominos and little ceasars are the worst. have you feelin like **** for hours after eating it
pizza hut is usually alright
but if i get like a local joint or higher quality place im alright

I make homemade pizza once in a while. The cheese alone can be $8-10 worth on a pizza if you're doing it right. So I can definitely see why regular pizzerias sell for $20-25 a pie. (Super Ded fkn Srs)

There's more to pizza than just putting together cheap ingredients though. The airiness of the dough, the crispiness of the crust, the flavor of cheese, the quality of toppings..
