Was wrestling better in the 80's?

I grew up watching wrestling in the 80's and I've tried to get back into it but it just seems kind of lame now. Even though the characters back then were completely over the top and cartoonish it still somehow seemed more real and less scripted. None of the new wrestlers seem to have anywhere near the charisma of the old school guys. The matches seem to be too rehearsed and more like an acrobatics show than a proper wrestling match.

I was watching some old Randy Savage promos and what a character.

Yes. Wrestlers in the 80's looked like superheroes and you believed what you were watching. No 135lb twinks like Darby Allen, Gargano, Chiompa, Adam Cole, and whoever the hell else should not be wrestlers (that kid with Christian). Companies want to control everything so there is less freedom for a wrestler to cut a promo and work "ad hoc" based on what the character would do and instead they have to regurgitate what was written for them which often does sound not believable. The other problem is wrestlers using finishing moves as regular moves and kicking out and not selling. Just watch any match with the Usos and its nothing but superkicks. Everything has been watered down and most of the wrestlers today like Cody and Roman are just fluff. What do you think would happen if it was Cody vs The Ultimate Warrior in the 80s? It would be a Saturday morning squash match.

Yes. Even the promos were so much more better back then. Mean Gene was a character himself. Roddy Piper on Piper's Pit. Jesse Ventura's Body Shop. Do they even do interview style promos anymore? Seems like they just talk directly to the crowd from the ring now and it all comes off so scripted and rehearsed.
