In 2016 I built my PC when GTX 1080 came out. I have been using this PC to game ever since and have been gaming in 2k with 0 issues.

Fast forward to 6 months ago and my 2k monitor died so I upgraded to a 4k 28 inch 120 HZ monitor for $600 for future proofing.


I was on the lookout for good deal and picked up AMD Ryzen 7800X3D , Motherboard , and 32 GB DDR5-6000 memory for $450 bundle deal from microcenter.

Also decided to buy 7900xtx and a 1000watt PSU .


I have all the parts i need but i am not sure if i really need this. My gtx 1080 is still playing everything i throw at it at 2k and on top of that I have a ps5 connected to 65 inch oled downstairs and a xbox series x connected to 100 inch 4k projector.

I game maybe 10 hrs a week and not sure if I should spend $1700 on a PC when i already have one that works and i have two 4k consoles.

That 7800X3D combo is a really good deal. You could always just use that setup with your 1080 and upgrade your GPU later. Are you sure your 1080 is still hanging in there though at 2k? Benchmarks show it getting absolutely crushed at 1080p, this is with all low settings and no RT



the 1080 was an amazing card for its day but it is old.

No matter what, I would not keep the 7900XTX. Buy a 4070ti, a 4080, or just keep your 1080, but I bought a 7900XTX a year ago and had non-stop issues with it until I returned it and bought a RTX card.

When it comes to justifying your purchases on gaming, look at your income, look at your net worth, be honest about your spending habits, create a budget.

I personally bought a $3k gaming computer in 2020, and it started having issues so I bought another one last week for $3k. So this is essentially $1k/yr. If you feel like 1k/yr might be too much for you then don't do what I did. But it sounds like for you it's a PC upgrade occurring over 8 years time, if you usually buy $2k PC's then that's only $250/yr. Doesn't sound so bad.

My only gripe with you is that you went with an AMD CPU and AMD GPU lol. The former is honestly probably not as big of a deal as the latter IMO, DLSS is too good to pass on IMO, especially now that the 4070 SUPER and 4070 TI SUPER are options for great performance at a budget.

I just beat Remnant 2 with a friend on 2k resolution. Ive even beat Cyberpunk when it was first released with no issues.

I have not opened it yet will not build the computer until Friday so i have plenty of time if i want to switch it out.

I just checked and Cyberpunk on high at 1080p with a 1080 sits at like 45 fps. I guess that's playable but I would not enjoy that. The problems I had with the 7900xtx weren't with the card, but the drivers/software. When I bought the card early last year the drivers were ok, but I would get driver timeouts that would crash the game. Sometimes 30 mins into playing, sometimes a few hours.

That's already pretty bad considering you just dropped $1k on a card, but I stuck with it and thought it was get better. Then last summer, AMD's drivers fell off a cliff. In July I upgraded drivers, and I immediately got horizontal scan lines on my monitor and thought the card had died. Then I rolled back the driver and everything was perfect. From July-August no new driver worked for me, I had to stick to a really old one. With any new driver I couldn't even use radeon to adjust things because even activating something like freesync would crash the program. Tried everything, AMD even gives you a special cleanup utility to run when updating drivers, nothing worked, so after two months I sold the card and went back to nvidia. Zero issues since then.

It wasn't just me, look on the internet for how many issues people have with AMD cards. I thought the drivers being bad was a meme but it definitely was not. Will never buy an AMD card again, hopefully you have a better experience.

your gtx1080 will struggle at the 4k monitor you just purchased

you got yourself some of the top of line parts... if you want to game at 4k those are needed. Just build it and enjoy it will last you a long time.

I wouldn't game on a PC if it were free, but that's me. I think the answer to your questions lays in how much you use your current PC, if you use it more than your consoles, why not upgrade, unless you are poor.
