Got my daughter a IEP.. she's blind

Took my 5 year old daughter to the local public school office cause she is 100% blind and she will need an IEP and support.

The coordinator that saw her was really rude. She wanted her to come into the office to "verify" the disability.

So we sat down at the kids table and this lady who was wearing a mask said let's get started.

She asked my daughter what her name was and then it got really weird.

She waved her hand in front my daughters eyes and asked her if she could see anything.. like the movie Road Trip when Stifler waves his hand in front of the blind chick who works for those buses.

Of course my daughter said No.. and she then said.. Ok.. it looks like she is blind and we filled out the paperwork for the IEP.


I was furiuous... but I got the IEP.

The program in your school district sounds completely fuked. They most likely need a specialist they don’t have to administer the test properly for your child disability.

But you are owed a real assessment for all potential tangential issues your daughter might have.

For example my middle child needed speech therapy, now we have a few things we need to work OT over that are separate but semi related.

Check out The National Federation of the Blind. They have people who can help you get resources, and educational support, and accompany you to IEP meetings to advocate on your daughter's behalf.

I have a friend that is a teacher in a wealthy school district
He said 60%+ of the kids have IEPs
When the majority of students have them, it is not possible for the people who really need them to get the attention they need. (like in the OP)
Some are as simple as they say they "need" to have a cell phone and the ability to answer as all times (parents calling)
System is so abused and a literal blind child they have issue with
These public servants are rude leaches
