Is retro gaming the future?
Hardly any games in the horizon. Hardly any exclusives. Gaming getting more expensive. Microtransactions and DLC galore.
Do we just go back to the old CRT's and consoles at this point?

You don't even need new CRT's if you're smart about it. With Series X you get 4K resolution up-conversions with enhanced graphics and 60fps boost, good for original Xbox, 360, and One games. Heck outside of that we now got loads of good tech for old tech like HDMI converters for old consoles that enhance graphics with the original games and hardware.

Been that way for me lately. I'm not a huge gamer, but now that I'm getting back ino gaming, not many of the new games really interest me..besides the fact that I can pick up older games or even a couple years old extremely cheap these days.
Played through DOOM eternal..loved it
Played through AC Black Flag and Odyssey..enjoyed them both
Right now I'm playing through Jedi Survivor..it's not bad, a little gimmicky but enjoyable, next I'll play Mad MAx and possibly get into CyberPunk come summer, but I'm not sure if that game is really my style even though I love the GTA franchise.
Older games just seemed to have much more depth, storytelling, and even difficulty to them. Nowadays every game is telling you exactly what to do, where to go, X-ray vision, and just seems to hold your hand that for me completely breaks immersion

I mean, most gamers probably haven't played all the good games there have been over the past 15 years unless they are getting paid to game.
I'm loving BG3 atm, will get the new Horizon (PC) when it comes out next month. I for sure don't feel like I can keep up with gaming releases tbh.

People need to stop pre-ordering games, I'd go so far as wait a month till the game is released before you buy it, and all the paid reviews are flushed out, and you start to get genuine feedback of how broken or underdeveloped the game truly is. Developers get away with releasing chitty games because people rush to buy.

used to be big on original hardware but lately I'm preferring emulation for the real classics and like Jay mentioned backward compatibility on Xbox, it has a pretty solid library and I love how you can still use the physical media (of course you just download the game from the store but it's the idea that you can pick up an OG Xbox game and put it in your modern console and it plays like a dream)
also like the Nintendo Switch Online service, limited catalogue but the option for save states and rewinding (8/16 bit) are pretty neat
but there are solid modern games coming out as well so you just gotta switch it up a bit

Microsoft going third party really has broken the xbox fans.
I have a CRT, but I mostly just emulate now. Saves wear and tear on actual hardware. I also only have the N64 hooked up.

Gaming on OG hardware is nostalgic, but it is just so much easier with emulation.

I have no idea how you guys beat games fast enough to be ready for all the new ones. Not to mention the awesome AA and indie Rourke that always pop up in between that seem to be largely overlooked.
If AAA games slow down, I might be able to catch up for a change!
Doubt it though.

I'm not saying it's great on the whole - I was pissed at Cyberpunk when it came out, but there have been games. If someone only plays 'AAA games' then, sure. DoS2 is a fantastic game I'd recommend today. *shrug*
There isn't enough time though to play all the good games that have come out over the past 5ish years.

Everyone is all dooming gaming as if it hasn't grown exponentially in the last decade, it ain't slowing down either.
Retro gaming has become so popular because gaming has in turn become so popular. There's more ways to play old games now then there ever has been.
It's not the future of gaming, but it will always be part of gaming. Every type of hobby has a love for the retro aspects of that hobby. Cars, motorcycles, stamps, comic books, literally everything hobby-esque has a huge subculture of retro lovers. Gaming was never going to be any different.

Price of CRTs if you can find the good ones, are high as heck too.. everyone see's it coming.
I was able to secure a Dell branded (Sony Trinitron) CRT monitor a couple years ago for $150...
The next thing I want to get is a CRT TV, but a sony branded or rebrand cause they have the best screens.

Enough shaders, etc today to have that CRT feeling so don't see the need to buy an old, ugly, bulky crt.
