Podcasts used to be better

There are still some great podcasts out there, don't get me wrong.

But there are so many garbage ones now. Every time I get recommended a podcast or come across something that might be interesting it's some meandering ****head who appears to masturbate to the sound of their own voice, taking 3 hours to say 90 seconds worth of information. If they do happen to have a good guest on they just talk over them or get them sidetracked.

"but otherwise i'd be bored doing the dishes" - take the boredom. it's better to let your mind take a breather rather than cram it with constant low value stimulu/information 24/7.

It's also an unhealthy approach to life in general, because you're essentially dulling (or rather, not practicing or developing) your own intuitive sense of how to live and what's good for you and so on and so forth, and instead placing all your trust in an "expert" to guide you.

agree on this - the appeal to authority "Experts said" is how we ended up with a lot of problems lately.

Vintage Rogan was often excellent, Vintage C*mtown episodes are still the GOAT comedy podcast, and Brightside Radio was the best way to discover amazing new musical artists up until 2018-ish.

The golden age of podcasting seems to be behind us, boyos

There's way too many of them. Really the only one I pop on is Tim Dillon from time to time.

Schulz is a tool. Kreischer is a needy, self-centered drunk. Segura and his wife are insufferable, smarmy retards. Bobby Lee got cucked so hard and still does a podcast with his very deranged ex. Bill Burr is still funny but god damn he got softer than baby chit. JRE has always been too big of a time investment. Marc Maron is still a narcissist, but a much preachier one nowadays. Cumtown seems like it is made for 15 year old kids and has some retard constantly cackling. Conan is still funny but has that annoying lady and dude who do nothing but fake laugh at everything he says.

Fuk podcasts.

There's a weird genre of YouTube in which unfunny people bish about this chit specifically, but what is weird is they are getting almost as much views as the podcasts themselves. It's like "Drama channels" but focused on comedians.

I think comedy is dying in this era, in general. Too much of the culture in 2024 is regurgitating and remixing...memes and chitposting, IE, acting like a retard and being intentionally terrible at stuff. Which is one step up from weirdos lipsyncing scenes from movies.

The best chunk of podcast I saw recently was David Spade going on the "Bad Friends" podcast. Bobby Lee shows up an hour late and David Spade just roasts the chit out of him. But I rarely watch more than a couple minutes.

I used to listen to Burr on my commute to work. The only time I listen to podcasts is when I'm driving, and I work from home now, so I have no need for them. It's like putting on the radio, at this point.

It very much depends on the podcast but it's true to say that the explosion in the podcast market has meant lots of people creating them without necessarily putting the work in.

99% of posts on podcasting forums are people who, after their third episode, are confused as to why they aren't millionaires with 10,000 downloads.

Many podcasters coming into it think the format of shooting the breeze and talking about films/sports is the sort of content people are aching for. Perhaps 6 years ago and even then you have to put in a lot of work to sound natural or hope you magically have great chemistry.

I've been podcasting for 7 years, it's a hobby. No ads and not looking to get famous or make money. The topic is niche (ancient history) and I get nice feedback from time to time from people. That's more than enough for me. My advice to anyone is just enjoy it and don't get obsessed with downloads etc.

yea. imagine how arrogant you have to be to just start a podcast and think you are so amazing people will dedicate hours of their lives listening. If you are doing it just for fun/passion then that's not an arrogance thing. but for others to think you should have sponsors and ads and great guests just because you exist. You have to accomplish something first.

That makes me think of another thing - if you're interested in the guest you could just follow them on twitter and get their thoughts on things far quicker. you have to really like someone to listen to them talk for 4 hours. especially if half of it is about bears and DMT you've heard dozens of times before.

Thanks for clarifying - if you are just in it for the fun then no criticism but there are those who almost seem obliged to have success.

The irony is that most 'just talking about stuff with my friends' podcasts are very, very structured. Comedians do well because their skillset is able to allow for a more relaxed and informal feel.

yea and if you're just putting it out there saying hey i enjoy this if other people do too, great if not, i still had fun... that's how the good podcasts seem to start.
