I look back in history and feel like people were happier back in the day, even without any modern day technology.

Evolution is based on propagation of genes ie what qualities make a person more likely to reproduce, and have those offspring survive to reproduce etc? Look at family size and structure, incentives around same, and who is reproducing the most. What select pressures exist (or have been removed) today?
