The death of the girlboss?
Video by The Critical Drinker
The flop of 'Madame Web' may be the final nail in the coffin of the woke writers, who make Mary Sue female leads. Probably a few more are in production and will come out over the next year but I think it's coming to an end. Nothing wrong with an occasional female lead in an action flick, but not in the abomination style it's been done in the era of wokeness.
'Madame Web' has been out 1 week and is already pulling under a million a day at the box office.

I've rewatched a lot of "older" movies, like recently I watched the 1988 remake of the Blob w/ my kid. It was lot gorier than I remember, but the on-topic aspect, the female lead was great. Empowered, brave and capable in her own way. Not a girl boss, though. There is a part at the end, the male lead tries to stop the blob by freezing it using a truck that sprays fake snow chemicals (going to explode the freon tank or whatever). He crashes and needs rescuing. She picks up a M16 (the evil corporation scientists who created it were getting killed left and right earlier and she just picked one up). She attempted to fire it and just botched it entirely. Couldn't hold it straight, the recoil flew her all over. She then gathered her composure and tried again and shot straight.
Just a little detail like that, to me it made her more heroic to go into some situation blind like this, Vs the Disney version who would have done it all by herself, would have instantly for no reason been a perfect marksman and been surrounded by a male lead who was weak, effeminate and did nothing.
Yet, it's the 80s they chit on and pretend needs fixing.

Godzilla Minus One did the strong female character right.
She was tough and dedicated to her family. Not some emotionless robot that punches people.

The people who push for or endorse this modern insanity, they want to pretend every woman before 2016 was a weak damsel whose sole purpose was to have jiggly breasts, but they're just fuking wrong and the more I think about it, the more I see that the 80s, 90s and so on got it right. And getting things right, for them, is the enemy because they want to upend things and make insanity the new normal.
Men and women are different. You can have a Xena Warrior Princess, but she's special because she's the exception. In most cases, go look at sports when men pretending to be women compete with female high-level athletes. These men, who are not high-level athletes in their own right, who often are even on hormones that limit their ability, even with that -- in a purely physical contest, it's not a contest. They dominate and destroy, because -- Holy fuk, but men are just stronger, faster, have more endurance and all-around better at most physical activities.
Hollywood and Disney can try to re-imagine reality all they want. Make a movie with all women girlboss fighter pilots, but oh chit in the real world, women are inherently worse at handling g-forces and are far more prone to falling unconscious. So, it's not because of misogyny that less than 10% of pilots in the AF are women (and those that are, almost always mobility planes), it's just how chit works much of the time.
In the past, entertainment used to respect the differences w/ men and women and simply acknowledge reality. Since they did that: Like I said, that is the enemy and they will lazilly screech anyone who does not fall into line with their broken thinking some flavor of "ist", misogynist, bigot, racist, whatever, they'll unload with all the go-to words they've misused and weaponized for the past 10 or so years and the sheep who are too wimpy to stand up to them or too stupid to see it for themselves, they will go along with them, all pretending the naked Emperor has clothes.

"On Wednesday night, you could actually watch advance purchase sales declining in real time as buyers were refunding their tickets,” the insider is quoted as saying. “It really says something when you’d rather have Shazam! 2 numbers.”

I did not see them, but just looking at her, not a girl boss. She's attractive and shows a little skin, for starters. Otherwise, I suspect she didn't one shot enemies effortlessly while useless men around her flailed miserably needing her to rescue them.

The movies aren't masterpieces but they're fun.

I didn't' even know it was a girlboss type movie. I just heard it flat out sucked by every metric.
I like Jeremy Jahns' review on it also.

5th element, jovich was a bad-ass also.
but so was Willis.
and in the end, she needed him to get to the pyramid and he needed her to save the planet.
then he took her to pound town.

It's the Mary Sue part which is the problem. It's just a basic part of storytelling: your protagonist has to have failings and weaknesses so they can have an arc. Any protagonist who is morally perfect and invincibly strong can't have a good story. But in the current intellectually bankrupt era you can't give your heroine any weaknesses or failings or moral ambiguity, she has to be perfect. The inevitable result is terrible stories nobody wants to watch.
