🅴 Samurai's English Question #3 - "You Set The Tone."

I started re-watching an old but good tv show "ER" and found this expression in those scenes very intriguing.



Any thoughts from native English speakers?

It does depend on the context. Typically "setting the tone" means to establish the vibe or the attitude others will follow. In a way I would liken it to determining if a particular song you write is sad, hopeful and optimistic, or anything else. Taking the wheel and figuring out the direction others will follow. Something along those lines.

I assume it has a musical origin. Like "give me a C sharp" and everybody goes from there.

You work in a corporate environment don't you kaz? Any particular office has a standard of what is acceptable in terms of jokes, banter etc. That is the "tone" set by the leader/dominant personality and everbody adjusts their behaviour in the direction of that "tone".

It's a passive form of setting an example, in that setting an example is a deliberate act, but setting a tone is not.
Screw nature; my body will do what I DAMN WELL tell it to do!

The only dangerous thing about an exercise is the person doing it.

By doing that, set the morale of the team and the tone of group behavior.

High morale helps each member of the team become more engaged, efficient, and motivated, and also the collective attitude, overall satisfaction, and emotional outlook of a group as a whole.

When you are learning another language, you start searching for the meaning of one expression, and soon that leads to another interesting one before finding the answer to the first one. It never stops and happens all the time.

As a leader in a team you set the tone is the equivalent of we follow your lead.

Your mood personality behaviors dictate the way the rest of the people who work under you as the leader behave.

There are 1 million books here on business leadership and psychology so it it in that genre.
There is an unspoken thing, we are iron brothers and sisters, we are to support each other and...It is our duty to support our brothers and sisters in the iron game!

Yes, as a corporate middle manager, I had been trying toset the tonefor my department and teams throughout my career of 35 years in my previous employment.

My job was to create a work environment/atmosphere for my subordinates to devote their energy to the job and bring the best out of them to achieve our collective goals.

Not always but most of the time it worked. Like the show "ER", Morgenstern said it first to Dr. Greene, and from him to Carter then Carter to Morris, I was able to leave my team in a good hand when I quit.

The figurative expression's connection to the music field makes it more understandable and easier for me to relate.
