Even if you sold the laptop and bought a pre built I think that's a better choice.
Trading for someone's rig is iffy if you aren't a PC builder and can't identify potential issues

I won't quote spam, but agreed with the above mostly.
The desktop would perform better than your laptop, particularly due to the extra GPU VRAM and the cooling advantages it would have. But the storage is pretty crappy, if I did it I'd wanna get a 1TB or so M.2 SSD and probably not even use the hard drive.
It would definitely be an improvement, but it's essentially getting a same-generation desktop in exchange for a same-generation laptop. I think if I was to get a new computer I'd wanna move up at least one generation. PS: I know the desktop CPU is a 10th gen, vs your laptop's 11th gen, but 10->11 was almost a zero upgrade in the first place, let alone the fact we're talking desktop CPU vs laptop CPU.

I am a VRcel. What are you trying to get into? If flight simming you are going to want more than a 3060. Would go minimum 4070 super. (srs)
For most games a 3060 would be OK but its not going to be on super high settings.
I did an MSI build for around 2k with a 4070 Super and that was right when the 4-series came out, would probably be even cheaper now. Its been great.

Also what kind of vr are you thinking?
A quest 3 is fairly self sufficient and even when plugged into a PC most games or apps don't need toooooo much power.
If a quest is the route you're going maybe consider getting it first and seeing how your laptop handles it.
But yeah like the guy above said if you are looking to do sim racing and flight sim stuff then you'll want something kinda beefy

installing my new CPU cooler later.. might turn on PBO
I believe my CPU is throttling just a little bit
went with the ram I'm using for stability.. could have pushed it a little bit but I'm happy with it

3060 is junk

don't get anything less than a 3070 bro
sort by average bench
https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/
get into AM5 or LGA1700
https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/
unless there is a problem you're not disclosing about the laptop, sell it or trade for something better

You made me test mine out. Jealous of your RAM and Disk scores.

I wouldn't swap that laptop for that computer

also did an i9-14900kf but it kept throttling
trouble is my CPU is not being cooled adequately, I have another liquid cooler but I lost the adapter for the fans so I'm looking for it
additionally, this is an AMD 7800x3d & so I bought it for memory latency as opposed to CPU mark
you have a nice rig, definitely padded by the i7-14700k which is a BEAST haha
I've built computers since the 90's & quickly sold the i7-14700k machine I built in January
btw I'm using a 7900 XT !!
it beat your 4080 in 3D
which is nuts.. I won the silicon lottery on this thing.. I'm keeping it for sure

Assuming you are talking about MSFS also. While that has good eye candy, X-Plane is the most realistic flight sim. MSFS is more of a game where you fly unless you get into the nuts and bolts of the controls and cut all assistance off and use real physics. I was immediately turned off to MSFS the first time I used it until I spent a bunch of time in the settings.
