How much to retire to SE Asia?

Planning for retirement in the US seems bleak. 50s, 60s, 70s?


Pretty sure I can retire in my early to mid 40s to Thailand. Luxury Condos, which would cost 5k a month in a nice american city are super cheap. Right next to the beach.

Can't move with my dog, who probably only has 3-4 more years left in him. I have enough savings currently to move and be able to coast without even needing income for 15-20 years.

I too have thought about this.

Main drawback is medical care.

No point living in some paradise but the nearest modern medical facility is five hours away .

Maybe divide the year between there and home country.

How often do you go to the doctor? All of my doctor visits are for shots of penicillin once every few years, pretty sure they have that everywhere.

Now yes. But it becomes an increasingly significant issue with age. Live abroad for your "prime"/early retirement years, and then come back when you start really falling apart?

After living in Thailand, I can honestly say, yes, it can be inexpensive. For most, your monthly expenses will roughly be between 1200-2000 USD if you don't live crazily. As for healthcare, way better than American healthcare as is their dentistry. Much cheaper and access to medication is easier. There are insurance plans as well for many expats and retirees.

If you have Social Security and a pension that covers that... it's worth it. However, you definitely need rainy day funds as you get older... a hip replacement or something could be costly wherever.

I think Thailand or similar for retirement is a good idea as a backup plan. Like I'm talking, chit hits the fan, you lose your job, you can't get another one after trying forever, you've got 6 figs laying around and you feel like your money is draining just by existing in the USA, and you've got no wife or kids.

I have a "crazy uncle" that moved to the Philippines, he's in his late 60s or early 70s I believe. His kids are in their 20s/30s, he's divorced, he has a barely legal girlfriend he met in the Philippines , he's not rich or anything but had enough to feel secure in living there in his elder years. He's the epitome of black sheep of the family, no one cares about him anymore after he left.

I sort of agree its a good back-up plan. Its also one of the reasons I've been investing in/stock-piling crypto over the years.



Look I'm going to give the American thing a shot. I've got a house. I'm set to retire mid-late 40s. And I'm going to do the wife/kids thing. But if absolutely everything goes to hell. I'm not opposed to picking up my passport and crypto wallet and ****ing off to SE Asian. I can lift weights. Eat good food. Live in a decent spot. And smash prime 18-25 year old Asians long into my old age. Its a freaking great back-up plan.

Yea, I was thinking beach areas like Hua Hin, or Phukket. Now if you're going deep in the countryside to live with the natives, then yea good luck with that.

they can be great and affordable but there is always a hook.

its a foreign country so it requires some measure of planning.

Now as for the real reason guys want to go there, the women, they will come at a cost. There are tons of bars full of working girls who you can have for the night for a fee. Its a simple process.

If you havent experienced this yet in life it can be very intoxicating, having just about any woman you want and drinking like a rock star certainly has its appeal. Most guys will do it every day day in and day out for a few months until you get it out of your system.

Back in the Navy days when guys got stationed in the Phillipines, they werent really required to really work for the first few months because the commands knew they had to get it out of their system before being worthwhile.

This time will be fun as hell but also expensive, You can easily burn through all of your budget just on drinking and women in no time.

The smartest thing to do is to go there a handful of times. Get a feel for how it all works and get your fun in. This way you get a feel for what its like before committing to anything.
