Hermen Hulst: PlayStation is “Reevaluating how we operate” in light of the lay offs

Commenting on the news, Hulst confirmed that the lay offs have also resulted in the cancellation of unnamed game projects, which almost certainly includes London Studio’s online co-op game set in a fantasy London.

"Our goal at PlayStation Studios has always been to make the best games for PlayStation fans, and our global community of studios represent some of the most creative and talented teams within the gaming industry. PlayStation 5 is in its fourth year, and we are at a stage where we need to step back and look at what our business needs. At the same time, our industry has experienced continuing and fundamental change which affects how we all create, and play, games.

Delivering the immersive, narrative-driven stories that PlayStation Studios is known for, at the quality bar that we aspire to, requires a re-evaluation of how we operate.Delivering and sustaining social, online experiences – allowing PlayStation gamers to explore our worlds in different ways – as well as launching games on additional devices such as PC and Mobile, requires a different approach and different resources.”

the battle royale shooters are too big

but theres enough people out there looking for something different and I think thats why Helldivers 2 is doing pretty well right now.

sony's main thing is single player story mode games, but thats not where the cash cow is, being able to sell a monthly subscription battle pass and skins are huge money makers.

sony just needs to get their head out of their ass, bring back classic god of war 3 style of fights not an axe throwing puzzle simulator

bring back the feeling of power, they canceled twisted metal, but how about a twisted metal battle royale style game 30-40 people on the map, sell battle passes and skins for the characters. easy money.. make it multiplatform for PC and PS5 and watch it make money.

Their problem is how being the darling of gaming forum nerds and video games journalists can only get you so far. It seems like the industry has been only interested in pumping out similar big budget sequels to the same few big franchises that cover the same few genres. I know I've gotten burned out, especially when it comes to the kind of games that Sony is typically offering. Heck they just cancelled the new Twisted Metal game and that was going to be live services. Says everything about the state of the industry really. It's all about chasing the trends and trying to create the next big live services games. There just isn't much in the way of creativity or variety these days, at least when it comes to AAA.

All these big studios became bloated with massive budget projects fueled by diversity hiring and political box checking. Seems inevitable how that would eventually fall apart. Surprise surprise when times toughen all that unnecessary and corrupting bullchit tends to go.

So Xbox games have infiltrated Sony's market.

You're the one coping.

It's just over man. Complaining about the diversity hires isn't going to stop the consoomers from preordering and buying these games and then spending the next $20 on DLC. It's already done man. I'm not liking the future for Xbox or Playstation tbh. Hard to believe how hard it's all fallen.

This has to be the least eventful console generation ever...outside the mass layoffs and growing disinterest in the medium.

I don't get the Sony haters, when Sony says they are going live service it's bad, when Sony says they are focusing on Single Player, also bad.

Well that's the thing, at this point I don't even give a chit about the diversity hiring bullchit because it's been going on for so long, I'm just calling out the elephant in the room and addressing how the standards and everything has changed.

It seems like gaming was at it's best back before the PS4/One gen because that was probably the last time the industry was led by actual gamers and nerds with a genuine passion for gaming. Last gen basically ushered in a flood of new hires who are simply doing a job as directed that they simply see as work. This isn't like the past when everyone on a team shared a common vision or passion for what they're working on, the corporate suits took over and everything is now decided by executive boards going over graph and financial trends and goals. It's why we get so many similar feeling games, it's why the new Twisted Metal was designed around being live service and led by people so passionless they could just cancel it without giving a chit.

The whole gaming culture has changed. I'm surprised people keep buying these games. Outside of several games i won't even think about playing any of these. You don't hear much about other new games or Xbox games anywhere. In another 10 years it's literally just gonna be a few big corp games coming out i don't even know if Halo or Forza will exist anymore.
