Hot take: gaming hasn't changed that much, we're just getting older.

When it became popular and companies/shareholders realised how much money it was making. Everything changed after Skyrim.

You have work, bills, and responsibility now.

Of course chit was amazing when you barely had any other obligations.

Many of us still find great experiences, both in single and multiplayer games, you just have to do a bit of looking and not rely on the hype machine.

When they stopped making new entries and focus on DLC, microtransactions, and remasters. Between the PS2 and PS3 generation it started to decline.

When high speed internet became available easily to everyone, even through mobile

Combined with wildly exponential growth in revenue + popularity

Then covid came thru and gaming and game streaming saw another huge wave of growth

Now all the big companies that we know who made their bones on good classic games are owned by soulless greedy suits

With everything going on with controversies like the SBI situation this simply comes off as a joke of a take these days. It couldn't be more obvious how things have changed dramatically.

The massive success of online play with COD was the beginning of the end IMO

Massive commercial success & the need to make everything both "safe" & big-budget ruins art (see the commercial music industry and Hollywood). Throw in diluted single player experiences in order to pander exclusively to onlinecels & the growth of micro-transactions…gameover, boyo.

That being said, games have gotten much better in the last 5 or so years. I hope that trend continues, but we're SOL if the micro-transaction & dlc-everything trend doesn't somehow die.

When microtransactions were introduced.

GTA5 was likely the first game where I felt that a game was designed towards NPC kids who love spending their parents money online.

Then LGBT and being PC became a trend thus dumbing down games even more to appeal to NPCs

Literally most games follows the same formula today:

- overpolished graphics with way too many saturated colours. Way too much going on. Charachters that look cartoonish

- story that has been written with the idea to fill PC checkboxes first

- Open world if not an FPS. This usually means waaay too many rehashed filler trash added to make the game feel ''bigger''

- Emulate Superhero movies with dumbjokes and releationships that don't make sense

- Game themes usually are: homosex futuristic world, Edo period Japan, zombie land, modernday but even more ghey

Sounds like you made a list for nerds. Like not everybody cares about these 2deep4u games with high metacritic scores given out by paid off journalists and bad faith users.

When gaming companies decided to put their politics on video games. Nobody gives a fuk about politics in video games. People just want to play a good game.

The best part is these guys can't name any games from back then.

The only thing current day games are lacking (IMO) are TPS games. Unfortunately with how competitive gaming is now, I think TPS is likely a dying breed as KDR queens don't press the action in TPS games so they become camp fests. Then again, that started back in SOCOM 2 (If you played Enowapi, you already know) so maybe not exclusive to current day gamers.

This. The fact that he's calling Halo great is a clear indicator he has low standards. Halo's been dead since 2012 with Halo 4.

First one was great, just finished the second one today. As soon as I was getting into the game and thought it was opening up..it ended. Thought..wtf is this chit?? Could not believe how short it was and I explored quite a bit, as much as was available that is. Pretty good game, just way too short and the girl he falls for sounds like a tranny from Yugoslavia. srs

the rise of fortnite, overwatch, zoomer battle royals etc. was awful for MP FPS/shooters

Lack of decent GTA entries since V in 2012 (no EOD), but I dont really care about that

No RE game entries on the level of RE4/RE2

JRPG might not have the same quality anymore, hack n slash genre is kinda dying too which I used to like.

No old school dungeon Zelda

Those are just some things that IMO have started to suck, but there's also been a few great games in between this time

There's still undoubtedly tons of games being released, many of which are great. But the culture in the industry for both developers and fans has never been worse.

Also pertinent to mention the limitations of earlier technology inspired innovations. And the hobby was much more niche. Gatekeeping used to be a process to weed out those who lacked talent or vision, but nowadays the gatekeeping is demographic / politically based. People with talent being usurped by politically motivated hacks happens much more frequently than the reverse situation.

There's hardly anything good or memorable being released. Besides Helldivers (looks like a solid 7.5/10 game) there's hardly been much released in a years. We barely even have any new games being posted on here anymore srs.

Problem with Helldivers is how it looks a lot like a bunch of other popular/recent games.
