What DBZ meant to my people
Being a white kid in the inner city was tough; you had to deal with poverty, crime, and racist attacks on a daily basis. Our people didn't have a culture that we could be proud of. We were shamed for celebrating our heritage. While other groups were given free rein, we were called racists and supremacists.
We were a people without a people, so to speak. A demoralized group with no nation, with no flag.
Dragon Ball Z gave us inner-city white kids hope. While kids from other racial and ethnic groups were watching other shows, we watched DBZ. We were different; hell, in order to survive our environment, we had to be.
DBZ inspired us to fight the sociological pressures we faced every day. The story of the Saiyans - a subjugated group of people - and how they rose up against their oppressors resonated deeply in our community. Many felt that the story represented us; that we were the warrior race with great, dormant, unknowing power.
Thank you Mr. Toriyama. You gave my people self-esteem and a proxy for which we could find pride in our culture and people.
RIP.

black people became obsessed with DBZ later on. It was white cats and asians who smuggled in bootleg pre-english dubs in the early '90s who were watching first. anime/japanese cartoons were seen as nerd **** by the brothers until they hopped on the bandwagon. respect
